What is Blanchard?

CommemKingCommemKing Posts: 2,202 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just bought a nice Peace dollar and a Stone Mountain commem on ebay and they are in "Blanchard" slabs. They are nice little solid slabs. Does anyone have any info about this company? Show yours if you have one.

I guess they were into coin grading at one time? Were they only grading their own inventory?

Yes, they were a commercial "self-slabber" that sold "investment" grade coins in their "house-brand" slabs. Others were Hannes-Tulving, A-Mark, and Paramount.

Blanchard used to be my Doctor back in Austin, Texas. Gilbert Blanchard, MD.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

Some of the old slabs are quite nice. I like the Paramount ones. It's also fun when they have prices right on the inserts.

    They did nice multi-coin slabs:

Didn't John Albanese have an interest in the company?

I missed picking up one of these "roll" slabs a few years ago ... still regretting it. While the coins are generally just "meh" level coins and priced around "roll" price, the holder is interesting.

They are still in business and are major players. They encapsulated coins a very long time ago. For many years, they have been selling PCGS or NGC certified coins.

I am NOT recommending for or against Blanchard. I disagree with the approaches of some of the people involved. I am participating in this thread to provide factual information, as two of the posts above are misleading and might provide false impressions.

BIGAL2749: Didn't John Albanese have an interest in the company?

No, John Albanese is NOT a shareholder of Blanchard. He did grant permission for Blanchard to use his name in some contexts, especially in regard to selling CAC coins.

Zoins has been collecting coins for a long time and is knowledgeable. Others should be extremely careful about buying coins that were certified before 1986, or were certified since by companies other than PCGS or NGC. I discuss Paramount holders in a somewhat recent article:

  • Paramount holders are one of the older slabs I collect with the Redfield coins in them. Black, red and green inserts with green being the hardest to find.

John Albanese buys coins for Blanchard and my understanding is John started CAC with Blanchard.

Neat is a good word to describe them. I like the look.

NEN: John Albanese buys coins for Blanchard and my understanding is John started CAC with Blanchard.

This statement is extremely misleading. CAC sells coins to Blanchard and to many other retail dealers. Albanese started CAC by himself. He is the sole founder of CAC. There are other shareholders. Albanese is the only person with a large number of shares of CAC. A few of the original shareholders have since sold their respective shares. Present and past shareholders are major names in the coin business.
