0.25/2 or half a quarter found in CoinStar! ?

I've read here on occasion about the treasure (and trash) found in CoinStar machines.

I don't go seeking the CoinStar machines out but I've cruised past perhaps a couple dozen in the last few years and, inconspicuously, I'll glance to see if anything is in the reject slot. I've found something like 40 cents in clad coins and a couple of really crusty cents, but nothing great or even somewhat interesting.

Last night, I swung by the grocery for some milk and ice cream and it just so happened that directly across from my check out aisle was an infamous CoinStar. I rolled my cart by on the way out and actually spotted something in the reject bin. Barely stopping, I scooped, pocketed and rolled - 3 secs - out the door.

Here is what I found:

Of course, now I have to subject you all to this find since I am ignorant of anything looking like this. Hoping for some fabulous mint error or something like a split planchet yet totally willing to accept this as PMD.

PS - Here is the edge:

Sorry - it is PMD, done with a grinding wheel most likely.

Perhaps the new CoinStar machines are breaking up quarters into "bits" ...

PMD...courtesy of a grinding tool/wheel.... but certainly different. I too have been

'scooping' the reject bin at the local coinstar....have not found anything good yet...

a couple of West Indian quarters.... the rest has been clad... Fifty seven cents total in

the last two weeks. Cheers, RickO

Thanks for all the replies. I figured this was PMD, but agree it's kinda cool. I'll file this one in the 2x2 misc. oddities box.

Most definitely PMD but still .25 more than you had.

About a year ago I found a well worn 1954-D dime in the reject bin at the local Wal-Mart.

That's the only coin I have ever found in a Coinstar machine. I suspect the employees keep a sharp eye out. I know I sure would.

Double Prizes for me this week. I actually had to use a Coin Star for the first time ever. In the reject bin was 4 silver dimes and a silver quarter, and several demonetized Mexican coins. The reason to use it was my wife had picked up 2 UGLY night stands for $10 each. I stripped off the nasty black paint and what not, and underneath was a gorgeous cherry wood. They are either late 1800's or early 1900's. They are now refinished and sit beside out bed. One of the drawers was jammed, and when I got it open, there were several tired bags of pennies. I spread them out, 95% were memorial, looks like they came to rest early 1980, based on the really shiny ones. Pulled out the wheats, and some Canadians, including a couple Georges. Took the rest to CoinStar, and opted for the 100% value to Chili's. It came to just under $16, and with the coupon I had, our net cost was $6 for a tip.

So freebie meal and some silver.

Of course, based on the price of silver, they may be worth more as dimes and a quarter than silver value soon.

Yes, that what it is. But the mint should have waited for a round number like the 15th Billionth anniversary.
