Apparently due to wording in the law requiring all ASE's issued in 2016 to have a smooth edge will force the mint to remove all previous reeded edge ASE products from the catalog on Dec 30 @ Noon. These products include:
  • 2015-W Proof and Unc ASE's

  • 2013, 2014 and 2015 Congratulations Sets

  • 2014 and 2015 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Sets

  • 2014 Limited Edition Silver Proof Set.

The 2015 Limited Edition Silver Set, originally delayed due to packaging problems, will be cancelled. Sorry to disappoint those of you who wanted to pay $40 more for the same coins available elsewhere.

So if you really needed that 2013 Congratulations set, you only have a couple more weeks!

We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming...

Admittedly I don't follow moderns but are you sure that ALL 2016s will have this? I was of the understanding it would be a special effect ("gimmick") that would only affect a few (similar to reverse proofs a few years back)

Apparently, it is for every proof and uncirc ASE issed in 2016. (This does not include bullion.)

Text of the law, Section 73002 of Public Law 114-94:

SEC. 73002. American Eagle Silver Bullion 30th Anniversary. Proof and uncirculated versions of coins issued by the Secretary of the Treasury pursuant to subsection (e) of section 5112 of title 31, United States Code, during calendar year 2016 shall have a smooth edge incused with a designation that notes the 30th anniversary of the first issue of coins under such subsection.

Now, the word "issued" can be interpreted different ways, but the Mint has determined that "issued" is the same as "sold", and not "minted"...

Well, it's not like 2013, 2014, and 2015 Silver Eagles are all going to magically disappear in Dec 30th.

The trick will be in finding those 2016-W Silver Eagles that somehow manage to find their way into the bullion presses and end up with a reeded edge. I can see it now: "2016-W Edge of 2015 SAE"

I wonder which dumbo in Congress came up this idea? image

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Only the collectible coins, the Proofs and what the Mint calls "Uncirculated" (but which collectors usually call "Burnished Uncirculated" with a mint mark) will have the lettered edge and no reeding.

Maybe the smooth edge is necessary for the inscription "that notes the 30th anniversary of the first issue of [ASE] coins."

Sounds very cool to me -- especially for a one-year-only coin. I bet they sell a boat-load!

This was not part of the BaCCPEaCSA. (Who comes up with these names?)

This was part of the FAST Act, Public Law 114-94. (A transportation bill, afaik.) Sponsored by Rep. Davis, Rodney [R-IL-13] with 118 cosponsors.

If you want to find out who introduced that part of the bill, I suggest you start checking for relatives of the congress critters and the people who make the edge lettering press... image

I never even thought of that. I'm sure at least one will occur.
