Home Metal Detecting

First time out in about 6 years

Got out with my brother for a bit today. Sorry in advance for the awful, terrible flip-phone pic!
We got :
a very nice 1831 large cent...clearly visible on both sides with no cleaning.
an 1868 two cent piece...condition almost as nice as the large cent.
three Indians....1860, 1881 and date unknown.
Also 3 buttons.....cast cone shank, two piece that appears civilian, and a small button with circular decorations.
Not shown are some misc. broken cast iron stove parts, misc. br***** and ferrous metal scraps and a few flattened aluminum cans and pull tabs.

Awesome work, WWIT! Sounds like you dusted off the cobwebs superbly! A large cent AND a 2c piece? Awesome! I still have yet to find a "fattie" CN Indian cent, myself, let alone the 2c piece.

Anytime I see flat buttons like that come up on a site, I get excited, 'cause I know the large cents and Seated or Bust coins could be nearby. Looks like you proved that in this case!

great haul of oldies! That LC looks great, and the 2 cent piece is nice icing on the cake! What kind of property were you hunting? Any idea on the age of the shell casing?
  • Hi, thanks. Site is long gone homestead (there is a well, a few rocks) at edge of large field. We've found mostly mid to later 19th century coins there, along with the usual buttons, whosits and whatsits. The shell casing is a 1954 Remington Arms.
