Golf HOF Rookies and Autograph

I wanted to share my collection of golf hall of famers rookies and autographs. My collecting goal is to collect both the rookie card(s) of all golf hall of famers and an autograph of all hall of fame members and where possible both at the same time (Autographed Rookies).

Some of the threads on here lead me to believe I'm pretty far down the totem pole in terms of golf collectors; so hopefully some of the experts can help me where I get things wrong.

My goal here is to create a master list of the hall of famers with images and to show off my collection. Glad to answer any questions about how autographs were obtained/etc.

First 3 of my favorites from the 1971 Barratt set. I believe all 3 to be rookies.

Tony Jacklin - Great signer TTM

    image

Jack Nicklaus - Doesn't sign as well as he use to, can get him at golf tournaments. Bought this one from Mike Navarro:

    image

Gary Player - Signs TTM; but limited to 1 per person per lifetime. Hopefully I picked the right card:

A lot of the LPGA golfers were featured in SI for Kids magazine. I think they are the rookies for many. Here' some of the one's I've gotten so far - all TTM:

Arnold still signs TTM, but if you send it to him you should do it care of a tournament; even then sometimes you end up with a autopenned example. Got this one signed c/o the masters, not an autopen for sure. As for his rookie, I think this is it. I would understand the argument that this isn't a card as it's out of a book. Not sure what the next choice would be. Maybe the 1968 Mira Tuttosport.

An important set for the golf HOF rookies is the 1981 Donruss set. These were about all through the golf hall of fame

Peter Thomson I believe has 2 rookie cards from 1959. He's a great signer TTM and I was able to get both signed. If you send a card to him make sure to ask him to sign on the front; he signed my top flight stars card on the back.

Ernie Els has 2 cards from 1996 that I'm aware of. One from Ritchie (I haven't seen this card, anyone have one to post or for sale image). The other shown below. I think he signs through tournaments but is a little spotty TTM. Since his 1996 cards aren't too easy to track down I had this one done via consignment:

Gene Sarazen has unfortunately p*****ed. The number of signed items I've seen of his leads me to believe he was a pretty good signer. I think his rookie card is the 1924 Willards Chocolate card. I haven't picked up one of these yet. I did find a 1928 churchman's on ebay that was signed and scooped it up, it is encapsulated by PSA now.

The 1992 proset international stars has a few rookies in it - at least I think these are rookies. Anyone know of earlier cards for these?

In 1986 Fax Pax released a set of cards featuring 36 of the top golfers. Quite a bit of star power. I think several are rookies including the ones below. Bernhard Lnager is a great signer TTM, Greg Norman does sign but I think he's getting tired of signing things for resellers. When he signed my card he put a big stamp on the back to the effect of not resalable.

This TTM request was one of the easiest on the mailman. Mr Burke works at the champions golf club in houston real close to where I live. I probably should have just gone and played a round. Anyone know of an earlier card than this?

Like tennis and other sports the 1977-1979 sportscasters contain a lot of rookies. Of course some prefer regular card sized cards. I don't mind the sportscasters, but do prefer the regular sized cards if they're from the same year. I'll take a sportscaster over a card that was issued 20 years later though. Here's some of the ones I've gotten signed. For the master list at the start I'll post other possible rookies.

I get a little mixed up about some of the Panini years. Sandy Lyle's rookie is the 1986 Fax Pax ; and possibly the panini. I think the Panini may be later. Great Signer TTM.

Proset made some pretty good sets in the 90's. Lots of rookies in those sets; though I wouldn't be surprised to find there's some foreign issues that are earlier. Here's some I have:

Nick Faldo is featured on a few late 70's cards - Golden Press, Verolandus, and Sportscaster. My preference is the golden press, it's a nice photographed card vs a drawing and smaller sized. Here's the ones I have:

Lots of Golf Course Architects in the hall of fame. So far as I know none are shown on cards. Anyone know of a good golf courses set or other card media to get the architect's signature's on?

I got this one of Pete Dye on a sportscaster:

That's the best card I can think of for any of the architects. The 65 Palmer is definitely regarded his rookie card among golf collectors; it's just a pain to have to get two cards to have both the front and back. There's a golf HOF set registry you can check out to get some ideas for others, though I don't like many of the choices. If there are any players you need help identifying a rookie for, feel free to reach out.

I'm loving the progress so far and looking forward to future updates image

Great collection. Your tennis rookie collection is very impressive. Looking forward to seeing this one grow. I tried asking psa to slab the 1962 Dickson Orde South Africa card as Gary Player but they refused. I guess I'll try Ttm and hopefully if he signs one and it's authentic.. I'll get his name on the slab.

And I forgot to say thanks for showing the 1979 Golden Wonder Faldo, I had thought the Venorlandus was his only rookie issue. I won a PSA 10 of that card today and am looking forward to having it in hand.

I mailed this card in 1/14/16. The tracking never showed it was delivered. It said it was undeliverable and forwarded but never updated as delivered. I assumed the card was lost in the mail and chalked it up as a loss. I got this in the mail today along with a letter from the Gary Plsyer group saying to enjoy your signed collectable. Thanks For the address. I hope psa slabs it. The Gary player auto in the first post looks much better than mine. Wish he used a thinner marker for this but I'll take it. Thanks again

Grades just popped and the Gary Player auto passed. The card was graded a 7. Looking forward to seeing how it's labeled. I should get the cards back Friday or Saturday.

CONGRATS on getting it into a slab. Enjoy.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

    Congratulations on it passing!

I just went thru all the cards again that have been posted.

I enjoyed the journey - saw names I've totally forgotten.

    Thanx all.
