Here is a side by side 8.5

The centering top/bottom doesn't appear 9 quality.. The edges and corners look almost too sharp - sheet cut ?
    Enjoy your collection!

I agree. Definitely has a shot. Centering is a bit high T/B, but PSA prefers centering higher vs lower on 75s. I'd go with Swartz and say 8.5, though half grades are inconsistently assigned.

I would say 9 all day long, but it's a '75. PSA grades these WAY too tough.

    Good luck!

I would disagree, Brian~PSA definitely favors higher centering over lower centering for 1975 Topps baseball, at least. Not saying this card will grade PSA 9 (more likely it's closer a PSA 8 than a PSA 9), but it has at least a shot. Here's a Torre, graded PSA 9 with similar T/B centering (and same color combo).

And a Morgan, again same color combo with All Star, centered a bit better than the Carew, but at least similarly:

I'm having trouble posting this message, but I'm not smoking anything. What are the concerns regarding PSA's standards for centering on a PSA 9 again?

That Schmidt is clearly misgraded. It should be in a PSA 7 holder, maybe a 7.5 on a generous day.

It looks 32/68 L-r, not in the PSA 9 range at all, not to mention the edge dings/wear.

Just awful looking for the grade assigned.

That Schmidt isn't mine BTW, it recently sold on ebay. I was surprised a card that off center was in a 9 holder.

I can see what Grote is saying about PSA favoring high centering over low centering, this Fran Healy was a recent sub of mine and I didn't think it deserved the OC qualifier.

I still love that Hank psa 7. I remember when you posted it before. The Hank #660 is notorious for print defects, and that one the surface is just beautiful.

I think that if you look at the card again it is off t/b as far as centering.

There have been a lot of obvious cases of mech error occurring on the grade portion of the flip for PSA cards. This is one that fits into that category. Not a grade assignment mistake by the grader, but instead I'm sure it was a mech error when it came time to print the flip.

    thanks darin!
  • I agree that Psa tends to prefer 75s centered higher than lower but that card id either a straight Psa 8 or 9oc.
If that were a Psa 9 ...would it be one you would want to own in your collection?
And the Schmidt is obviously misgraded

I just had a thought...are there any websites where you can see how good you can grade cards? That is, you get a quiz showing the card (that's already PSA graded but with the grade hidden) and see how many you can get right.

I actually brought that up but not many were interested. Most of these members are very good at grading. And are usually very close to PSA's decision. I can get close but still have a ways to go. Practice, practice...
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image

I like the Carew, I don't mind cards that are very well centered side to side that are towards the top. With '75's it's less noticeable than on cards with "standard" borders.

I do NOT like the Schmidt card.

Rod Carew graded I guess a 9 wasn't in the card.

Should be a 9 no doubt.

  • solid 8 all day long...
  • 8.5 on the Carew. The Schmidt, in my opinion, is brutal.
