It would be chasing the flip and would have to match it aesthetically. Hope you guys enjoy.....
I agree that this one is not getting upgraded. What needs to be bumped other than the flip?
Im glad you guys are down to a few cards. Especially with prices where they are at....Although I think some Mantles are still undervalued. Im actually kind of "loading up" on one or two....We're not done with the price increases/growth....I need to talk to Belz about who's next because I pretty much just have one to go and that's the '52. So as I said....pretty much done.
As far as a line..ha..put me in your line(s). You know which ones I really like and Id love to have in my collection.
Here's the next one. It's a pretty good '66. The more I look at it, there is one thing that bothers me. Not enough to upgrade it though. IMHO it's a nice solid '66 addition and adds to my Mantle run overall. Def doesn't detract.
Solid 66. I agree that some of Mantle's cards are kind of sleeping giants-- which could awaken any moment. Though when the next beautiful example of each hits the right auction block, many collectors will probably be contributing to the fireworks...namely for the 52 Bowman, 53 Bowman, 54 Bowman, 63 Topps, and 65 Topps cards. The rookie 51B has been going crazy lately in terms of demand, people seeking, and seeing how hard it is to find a decent one. Ditto for the likes of the infamous 1957 and 1960 cards. The '62 also saw a big pop in recent times. Those early Bowman cards are gorgeous and depict the Mick in all his glowing potential. The 52, 53, and 54 Bowmans are also all beasts to find with great eye appeal. Centering is a hot mess on all three. The 52B especially is from such an early year and seems to rarely surface in a great state. The 1963 and 1965 can be found easily, but not with great centering and when it comes to the 1963, it reminds me of the 1960 in terms of the rampant print dot issues that plague the card. Finding clear green on the 63 is like finding a 1960 with a focused main pane that has no horizontal line on top AND a red box area that is clean. Just picked up my 8.5s of the 1960 and 1963 cards, along with the 50/50 1956 7.5 that beats every 8 I've seen and owned over the years. I have some hours of staring to do at the office desk now!
Hi guys, you're right with all this Mantle talk....let's take a break....if you enjoy cards you have to enjoy these three....I'm away for a bit so I'll leave you these for your perusal...
Background....for the most part I never ventured into anything pre-75 (def nothing pre-68ish).... And here again the story repeats. Why I'm sharing.....Someone shared their Aaron rookie and Banks rookie. (more on him later)...and I was hooked....Hank, where have you been? With my personality I was on a mission for an Aaron rookie. Obsessed even. There was so much to love.
Initially, how could I have missed him before? Wheres the top border on this set? Whats considered centered? Esp with 3 borders, weird. Whats the width of the bottom border supposed to be? Loved the colors. Esp the golden background. Just a great looking card. Esp for his rookie where Topps probably didn't give him any extra attention....This was going to be difficult.... So the search was on.... Before I knew it, I had these three on my desk with my eye on a couple of others. I had to stop.
I know, I probably need help....There was a period of time where I was bidding on pretty much every nice Aaron...ugh...Some of it the competition of auctions..(that's another thread)..... There is abs no reason that I need these Aarons. But, boy, they sure are nice to look at.... Esp together. I wish I could have included a pic with them side by side..I'll work on that later.....And again, these are from the proceeds of my unopened. So thank you guys.....
So for your viewing pleasure.....(Especially, for any Aaron fans out there. You've been quiet.)
...btw..JF, keep moving, nothing to see here, no need to continue, stop right here and enjoy your Holidays
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all.
Beautiful Aarons! I have the same affliction, it is not easily cured just so you know. I would definitely keep the first, the centering, gloss and surface are outstanding.
Thanks guys...I like Aaron. He's def a favorite of mine. Esp all that he went through. And considering a guy of his build had that much power and skill. That he didnt have to be the size of the recent gargantuan behemoths "hitting" HR's out at the rate of 70 per year. Thats another thread.
Ok, we'll go back to Mantle...
1961...nice solid design...I could have sworn the published auction pic of this card was of a better centered card. Oh well. Not the first time thats happened to me. That the centering appears to change a bit day to day. Otherwise, its a solid clean card. I really like how clean the background is. Dark, devoid of those ever present spots, etc. He's got that "colorized" appearance and clean borders. The borders are clean, white and just look great in reality...Almost bright white.....But you all decide. I like it. I think its a solid card in my collection.
...and again. This particular type of holder makes all 4 corners look soft. It's like there are 4 frosted squares there. They are just about razor sharp at my house. Which is unreal in a 54 year old card. If they could only tell us it's journey. To think a kid opened this from a pack in 1961 with his buddies...shuffling through, maybe refusing to trade.....OK, I digress....waxing poetic....Enjoy.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all.
not tonight, its over (1 a.m.) way past my bed time....if your bidding, good luck..im out...i think the 7 was a nice one...not bidding on anything tonight.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all.
Did not bid on it. Had a sweet Aaron rookie in an 8 years ago that was centered beautifully, and at some point I will grab another one. Have to save $$ for Hannukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa... before I go on another spending spree

I wish I understood what the deal is with the "frosted squares". I have several holders that have them near one of the four corners (not the same corner on all of them), and I even have one that has a frosted square on the interior area of the card. Annoying as hell, because they look like corner wear or if on the interior, a bubble or dimple.
seebelow...You should send the first PSA-8 Aaron for review. That card has not been subjected to the 1/2 grading scale...and I think it has a good chance of bumping to an 8.5. That is a stunning card!
The '61 is a classic great looking card. In my search those Aarons are the best that I have seen. I do agree with the above that the first could be bumped and the 7 could be bumped up also. In my eye I thought they were all 8's at least. Surprised about it only getting a 7.
belz and paulmaul.....i didnt realize that you could send it in just for a new holder. Do they replace the old tag also?
monte...thanks for the words...ive never resubmitted for a better grade...now you have me thinking, what are the odds? Just had to plant that seed didnt you. ha.
gemint...thx, you're correct, a Maris would make a great bookend for it!!
OK...1976 Brett.....i wanted to share another one of my favorites....didnt realize how tough it is to get a nice '76 Brett thats clean without the print spots, etc and centered...and def didnt realize the price was almost surprising ....almost as much his '75...almost....anyways, i think this Brett is nice to look at if fortunate enough to find a nice one....i may be alone on this one......one think about this one was the hunt for a nice example.
It's "only" an 8 but Im as happy with this one as I would be a 9 or 10. Esp the lower price tag helps.
...and the usu disclaimer....the border spot and "messy white" background is on the scanner glass, which i just cleaned..ugh,,,,.didnt see this until I'm looking at the magnified image on here...ill rescan and repost when i have time...hope u can still enjoy.....i still like it...it was the hunt
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all.
Love the 76 Brett. That was my favorite year as a kid since I started little league that year and had a zillion cards along with my two brothers. Not a ton of high end cards in the set, but I would buy 200 of the 1976 Bench cards if I could. Keep em coming SB!
That 76 Brett is a strong 8 if you ask me. Good centering on that card difficult to find and this one looks great. Strong centering with nice corners = a great 8. Looks better than a lot of 9's.
just some thoughts i put on the end of a diff thread...referencing the cost of the Heritage '52 psa 8 breaking $500,000 and on CNBC...
Must be a hedge fund manager etc vs a true collector (unless its a guy with multiple '52's). I say that because Id take the PWCC over this one every day. And it was less money! And so much better eye appeal. Tho this one is nothing to sneeze at.
Maybe the top for a little bit. Not gonna say the bubble word. Buuutt.....
1. The run up in such a short period of time
2. Looks like people are buying lesser and lesser quality for more and more money across the board (across the grades).
3. People throwing up/listing PSA 1-4's with crazy asking prices.
4. When the cab guy or your sisters hairdresser or the cover of Time (or CNBC) starts to know and considering buying
...well, those are the usual signs ....tulips, redhat, ethanol, on and on
Buuut, I know..this is different, no more being made, tons of demand that won't be met etc. I agree.....and Im def a buyer if any pullback...but i don't think there will be much of a pullback...Prob continue. Def will long term.
Agree with DM23, and as Ive said..i have a decent Mantle collection but Im priced out of the 52's and don't see me EVER getting one.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all.
....Heres one to enjoy that I finally scanned. I had a much nicer PSA 8 but someone whose name must never be spoken. Ha. But of course had a little sellers remorse so got this '60 to have it in its stead. It's a difficult card to come by and has a nice place in the collection.
Thats about all I got...now back to Army(winning so far) vs Navy.
here are my two '56's..i listed the 9 before but i don't think i listed the 8...same story....i think "someone" got my first '56 that i owned so replaced it with another 8, then the 9 followed.
Above...you can def see the difference when one slab has the 4 frosted squares in the corner vs the slab that doesnt = soft appearing corners. Then the logo in the corner. which i think has been fixed. a little bit.
thought id show two 56's in conjunction with KC's onslaught of recent 56's up for auction
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all.
Those are great looking 56's, and you are right that there are a lot of 56's up for grabs right now. I believe two auctions and 2-3 BIN's with the BIN's in the $10-12k range. 14 months ago this card could be had easily for $3200-3800 - now the soft ones bring $6k.
