How do I create paragraphs on this site? PCGS, please answer this!

BillJonesBillJones Posts: 34,736 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have reached my wits end. Now matter what I do, I can't create paragraph spaces on this site with the new software. It is useless for me to write any articles of substance here because I can't set up the page so that it is user friendly to read.

This new format has been in place for over a week now. Nothing has been resolved with this issue. The new software should be better not worse. This site is much worst now. Please, can you fix it or provide some technical help?

    Try this:

To make a line break, insert a <br> at the end of the line.

To make a paragraph break, insert a <p> at the end of the line.

If one edits a post, the breaks disappear and have to be re-inserted.

I use a text editor like Windows Notepad to create my text posts and save them.

    (Apple must have something similar).

Then I do a cut-and-paste to the board.

Have you tried hitting enter twice? Example below

A test sentence as a whole paragraph. [enter]

    [enter]

Another sentence as a whole paragraph.[enter]

    [enter]

    This doesn't work for you?

  • illini420illini420 Posts: 11,466 ✭✭✭✭✭
Sure, there are a couple of workarounds like using HTML breaks, but those are hopefully only temporary fixes until CU addresses this issue (and a few other lingering issues with the new software).

If posts have to be completely reformatted, including reinserting photos, every time a post needs to be edited, then this forum will suffer.

I recently edited one of my older posts just to change the title and the entire post is pretty much worthless now as all photos were lost and all formatting is gone... it's now just one big jumbled mess of a single paragraph that doesn't make much sense w/o the photos. Likely won't be touching any other older threads or posting any new ones w/ photos until the problem is fixed.

***********Just edited this post to add this line of text and I've now lost the previous formatting that was there************

How did you make the blank lines between paragraphs in your post?

  • illini420illini420 Posts: 11,466 ✭✭✭✭✭
It only works for me when using the "quick reply" box at the bottom of a thread.

But if I go back and edit a post, or if I post a new thread, then it doesn't work at all.

Read WillieBoyd's post above yours, he explains it. One thing I wish he would explain to me is how he got the angle brackets to actually show up in the text. image

I did not use HTML coding to make that post, I just used the reply box at the bottom of the thread and hit enter a couple of times to make the space. But I have since edited that post to show that editing makes all of that automatic formatting disappear.

I agree with BillJones. It is kind of ridiculous to think everyone will have to put brackets around a p to get a paragraph break. I hope they fix this issue so it is more user friendly.

I seem to get paragraphs just fine.

I am using Safari on OS X 10.11.1. Is this problem unique to windows setups? I did a test in the testing forum and it seems to work just fine. That was with a post of my own and not a reply, but I will soon know if this is any different. Just going on a bit to see if it word wraps at the end of the line.

    This should be paragraph #3.

Edit: It seems OK here. No HTML encoding here and a couple of edits, still looks OK.

    I guess I don't understand the problem.

I hit ENTER, get a new line feed.

I hit ENTER twice and get a line between paragraphs.

I know I whined a lot when the new forum was introduced but it seems to have gotten worked out to my satisfaction.

I see on the left of this particular screen:

"HTML code is not permitted. Special symbols permit some HTML functionality. "

I recall that there was some function in the PROFILE that fixed me up but I don't remember what it was. WYSIWYG vs HTML?

I've tried the double enter thing, and it does not work. The program just ignores it for me.

Hi Guys/Gals, I've been testing a lot of stuff here (unintentionally), and I once too was plagued by the issue you are describing. I no longer have that issue, and I can confirm I've tested every single browser:

    - Firefox Mac and Windows

    - Chrome Mac and Windows

    - IE 7.0-10.0

    - Safari 9.0

    - all iOS browsers

The only thing that I can recommend to you is do what I did.

    -- RESET YOUR BROWSER --

Browser caching is a source of a lot of problems. Each browser resets differently, and it's a PITA because you lose all of your stored autofill passwords and usernames, but it's worth it.

Clear the cache, browsing history, cookies, images, everything! Then reboot your computer. Then come to these forums. You should be logged out, which means you'll have to log back in. Give that a try and tell us here if suddenly it works as it should.

NOTE: posting images from https locations still doesn't work, but they already have that in their issue log and it will be fixed.

    Hope this helps...

edited to add: go into your profile and make sure you try the "linear" view...if you have another view format, it might be the source of your issues.

It doesn't work for me either, ever since they removed the WYSIWYG setting.

But if this shows as multiple lines, it is because I did it in the Quick Reply box.

    3 lines of text?

If your browser does not accommodate this, simply finish your paragraph, hit enter, type in one period.

Clearing your browsers cache can clear up a whole ton of problems. AND it can introduce a whole new set of problems such as passwords and history.

BUT, it's well worth the effort if it resolves your problems.

BTW, I'm on IE11 which is my primary browsers for coin forums.

I use Google Chrome for Facebook.

I also have Mozilla's Firefox installed but rarely use it for anything. I used to use it for Facebook but it simply got too cumbersome what with Adobe's ShockWave Flash Player getting all hosed up.

That's because they turned off the WYSIWYG editor (what you see is what you get) and so you must add coding to it as another poster mentioned. I haven't tried the < p > tag yet, but I do use the < br > tag twice in a row to effect a break. Also keep in mind that whenever you edit your post, you will need to reinsert the tags.

I have been using Word to pound out long comments/replies/and other entries, then paste it as a single original entry.

If edits have to be made, the paragraph spacing is lost and it gets all put into one sentence.

This is an original post with double "enter" used to separate sentences.

    Let's see how this looks.

https://www.google.com/search?...QHP2I74Bw&start=0&sa=N">no line breaks in forum posts

I googled this problem and it's prevalent on the internet. Some are affected and some aren't, but I have a hypothesis that:

    a) try resetting your browser

    b) during the time when we had WYSIWIG and Old School, if you were on WYSIWIG when they made the switch to the Old School style, you are the ones having issues. If you switched to traditional style before they made the permanent switch, you are fine

When they made the permanent switch the server cached your previous state, and if you were in WYSIWIG the server is expecting p or br tags to be embedded...and they are not in the old style.

So, I think they might need to flush the server cache...as a non-obvious but probably simple workaround.

Just a guess...based on some investigation.

Thank you explaining the "double arrows with a P" command that makes paragraphs. It is more work to post a large message, and the breaks go away if you need to edit the message. Both of those problems make it less attrative to post here, and make me less likely to to post extensive educational topic openers.

I hope that the people who PCGS will read this and correct the problems. They say that they have to spend on this site, and right now I don't think that they are getting their money's worth. The site is not as good as it was before. It could be better than it was before given some the other changes, but they need to address the issues I have presented here.

Posting seems to format better for me when using the "Quick Reply" entry box, rather than hitting the "Reply" link in the bottom right area of a post.

I've given up on ever trying to compose a helpful, informative reply complete with illiustration.

I gave up after CU moved the forum to the Cloud and we were inundated with CAPTCHA Codes and lost replies.

If that's the way they want it, I'm more than happy to oblige.

Informative replies go over onto Coin Talk where image loading is a piece of cake and replies can be as long as you like.
