Rarity - Publicity or Not

For rare coins, do you prefer a lot of online photos to view or no online photos so you have to see the coin in person?

It depends. If I've purchased many coins from the same dealer, then I have a good idea of what the coin will look like "in hand" from the images on the website. However, if I'm buying from a dealer for the first time, I would not trust the images to be accurate. Bottom line.... I rarely buy from anybody that I don't know.

What if the question wasn't to do with acquisitions.

For example, many rare coins that have spent many years or decades in collections may not have online photos available.

I like online photos and a 10 day return privilege. The only way to go.

Online photographs are a prerequisite for me, unless I am buying from a known

board member whose judgement I have learned to trust. Cheers, RickO

The question isn't really about purchasing, it's about ownership.

For example, if you owned a rare item, would you want to post photos online or not?

I got thinking about this with the Pogue collection and how many of the pieces have been in the collection for a long time without many online photographs.

Sure as this hobby is about sharing image

Would never want a 1964 Peace dollar as I see no fun in owning something which has to be treated like stolen art.

Clear online images are a must to even be considered....although I have taken a chance or two on "not so clear" images if the area of interest is identifiable.
