Does anyone still use or believe in Intercept Shield™ preservation products?

I remember getting these three protective holders several years ago from an eBay seller with a PCGS three coin win.

I thought they were cool and put them away and kind of forgot about them.

Got to love the Lucent Technologies Bell Labs technolgy label.

The black interior coating seemed to be of interest to forum members back in the day if I recall.

Now Intercept Shield is only selling their products through dealers and have dropped their Web distribution.

Is anyone still enthusiastic about these products?

Is there a newer or better technology today?

Thanks in advance.

GB, to answer your final question: Yes. I've chosen the Coin Armour system because the outer storage box is 1/4" shorter in length than the Intercept Shield outer storage box, yet the former holds up to 15 PCGS/NGC slabbed coins, as opposed to only 10 in the latter.

I only have one, but it came with a coin I bought from a board member. I do not recall the person's name, but the coin is a 1932-D Washington in PCGS 63. A real nice original looking coin with original skin (e.g. tone) and none of that dipped junk. I've thought about sending it in for regrade, because it is a looker.

I have used the product for years. The product disappeared off the market for a few years but it is back. Wizzard has them in stock again.

Realone, I think you may be missing the point. image This product is to prevent toning on white coins and future darker toning on beautifuly toned coins.

    Exactly!

And, to help protect copper coins.

I have a dozen of these, and most of them hold my early coppers

I use them for every certified coin in my own collection and have been doing so for perhaps 15-years.

I do like them and believe they offer protection. I wish they'd bring back the 20 coin track box for certified coins though.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I see one of the coins you have in the OP is gold, which probably needed the Intercept Shield technology least of all.

Let's see some copper that's been put away for the last ten or more years.

But yeah... I've never heard any reason to doubt the product's claims. I never used them, but if I remember correctly, ICG had some slabs with a black Intercept insert, didn't they? I had one, though I don't recall the coin that was in it. I think it too was gold and therefore not as in need of protection. But the black insert looked really nice with the gold coin in it.

To each his own realone, but a coin could easily tone to black in your life time if improperly stored.

From all of the positive comments tonight on silver coin tarnish prevention, I could assume that RickO buys this product on a regular basis....I look forward to hearing from our resident untoned coin collector expert. image

I use 2x2 intercept shield holders for all my shield nickels.

I started out with the single slab individual boxes inside large boxes. But it was too bulky so I switched to track boxes to get more in the safe deposit box. Have been working great for years.

I also recall that ICG put this material inside their slabs - the coin was actually mounted in a piece of IS - like the 2x2 holders.

Thanks for validating that memory. I wasn't sure I had it totally correct, but remembered one or two ICG holders with black inserts I had.

    What are "track boxes"?

I am no expert and have never used this product.

I do recall reports that they were taken off the market because "they do not work".

I am only a vague messanger here...not trying to burst any bubbles.

Is there any real data on these ... Or just "testimonials"?

one thing about Intercept Shield products to remember is that they won't neutralize what is already on a coin. that means that if you place a coin with active corrosion or some kind of contamination on it inside of a holder it will continue to react. the technology minimizes anything from outside getting to the coin. from that perspective, the ICG holders probably offered the best protection of any TPG when they had the Intercept Shield inserts holding the coin.

I use the slab storage boxes and the double row box with 2x2 plastic holders for the bank Safe Deposit box with silica gel packs just in case.

the only downside about the various boxes is that the black lining tends to come loose.

I have a few of the IS containers... but mostly I store in a humidity controlled

area and have had no tarnish on silver coins in all the years I have owned them.

A few (mainly darkside silver) were my Dad's coins and they are still tarnish free.

    Cheers, RickO

Don't use them as I have a bunch I've gotten over the years with purchases that are sitting unused on a closet shelf.

    This.

This may be a "I use them to keep the elephants away. You don't see any elephant around here now, do you?" sort of situation, but I still use them.

I still have one a purchased coin came in years ago. I agree, great find.
