Saw Dan Carr's $5000, 2.5 oz. slug at the Denver show today.

Very impressive! The owl logo is fantastic!

Any evidence of a 2015 Carr - Emslie Colorado gold half eagle at the show you were at?

no picture!?!?!?!?!
Just picture in your mind a big, giant owl on a $5,000. gold coin.
I have most of his fractional small gold with the LIBERTY on the head band, but I like the Pike's Peak reference for the CG pieces, since they are minted with Colorado sourced gold ..
Quick question??
How do I remove the image link when posting a picture as you have done ??

Nice. Perhaps my favorite DCarr design so far, except for one or two of the parody State quarters.
I think I might have to agree with you Lord M ..
It is just a gorgeous piece and can only imagine how beautiful it must look in hand ????
Big Poppa, I delete the URL that is shown in your photo.
If I edit the URL out, won't the picture disappear??

No, it just cleans it up a bit (less words {url})

That's cool Big Poppa but I like the Liberty version better than the Pike's Peak version, jmo though.
The other changes are the owl is slightly taller, varied star sizes/placement and a small DC logo, besides the Liberty change to Pike's Peak and the $50 to $5000 denomination amount..

On the other hand, several of both his silver and gold issues have had problems with dark toning, hologram delamination and/or unattractive spots caused by impurities in the metal stock which then turn into a major liability for the coin. His premiums are always very healthy and his customers allow his work to continue by paying these premiums, so I would expect an effort towards higher quality.
The other thing that's turned me off is that many times, some of his distributors bring special issues to a show when they are not available on his website and then they are pretty much gone when you look for them. Like this slug or other less expensive limited mintage issues, for instance. This causes me some misgivings.
That being said, Dan is continually innovating, frequently controversial, and the result is that some of his pieces wouldn't otherwise exist without his loyal customer base taking a chance now and then. I suppose that supporting innovation is always going to be wrought with some glitches here and there, but I think that this is the type of feedback he needs to keep his wheels on the road.
So, Captain - did you buy one?
I knew it would happen.

When will these be available? I didn't see them on your website.
I wonder if this Dan Carr guy has ever worked for the U.S. Mint, what a talent he has been given.
He designed the U.S. Mint New York and Rhode Island state quarters.
Can someone advise me how to add paragraph breaks on a post?

The enormous owl is standing on a crescent moon as if it were not a sphere, and the stars are between the dark side of the moon and we observers on the earth.
It's a nice artistic look - like the DreamWorks logo.

That's a nice looking piece too.
Who made that one?

I think this was the Ron Landis/ Monaco Rare Coins collaboration. It is a beauty
I want the Carr piece. The owl is a special symbol to me. Matter of fact I have one on my arm right now

Zoins, In reply to your above quoted question, according to the following 2008 Humbert $50 Gold Restrike Link the slugs were struck by Ron Landis.

My impression is that it wasn't he coin on his arm. How often do you have coins on your arm?

I bought two of the Landis/Monaco gold slugs from a forum member here for a modest premium over melt value. They were slabbed by NGC and graded Gem Proof without a numerical grade. I can not afford one of the originals so these were a good substitute costing a small fraction of what the originals cost. I figured it was a neat way to buy some gold bullion and to also get a very impressive coin.

I've been having mixed feelings about Dan's stuff lately. I do like a good percentage of his offerings and I've bought a fair number of them, in multiples.
On the other hand, several of both his silver and gold issues have had problems with dark toning, hologram delamination and/or unattractive spots caused by impurities in the metal stock which then turn into a major liability for the coin. Is there a precedent for the geometric design around the perimeter of this new slug? It seems dcarr relies on clip-art looking design elements too often. No doubting his technical skill. Just don't like the "had to put something there" approach to design.

Here is a link to some images of gold coins in the same shape and some history.Text
Some of the old independent gold was this shape.
Super nice medal. I'll save the photo to look at and keep the $5,000.
Bingo! Deja vu all over again re: Franklin Mint, Danbury Mint, Medallic Arts Company, etc., etc., - whatever.

Some of the old gold coins by independents was made in this shape. I have often wondered if they did this to copy some of the British coins of the time which had this shape. It does offer something different than the standard round coin. I very much like owls and they are my mothers favorate bird. When I was a kid growing up in AZ we would have owls in our yard all the time. Owls are also very special to Native Americans.
Seems like both gold $50 slugs and gold fractional coins were made in octagon shapes in the territories.
What are some period British gold coins that had a similar shape?
