1921 Buffalo - Which is it ? Broadstrike or Off Center ?

MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭

A friend - known by all here - Broadstruck - mentioned to me that he thought there was some
PVC in the letters and numerals on both sides of this coin. I looked at it more closely, and he was
100% correct. PVC had formed along the rim on both sides and effected parts of Liberty and
America and E Pluribus Unum.

I sent the coin back to our hosts asking that they remove the PVC and reincapsulate it. { No reason to re grade it }
which was done in March of last year. When the coin was returned to me - I could still see a faint tint of PVC -
but I thought that was the best that could be done.

This Summer, I had my friend and Photographer, Valente151 { Mike } over to do some imaging for me. I showed
him which coins I wanted reshot - the 1921 in particular - and also to get his perspective on what the coin was
doing - PVC wise. He said the coin had active PVC - and he would give it a bath in Acetone and remove all of
the PVC. Which he did.

I submitted the coin back to PCGS - no mention of the water under the bridge - just not worth it IMHO - and as
its an error coin - it was at PCGS since 7-31-15 [ date of acceptance ] until tomorrow when I think they will ship.

After 45 - 50 days - I got anxious and checked my submission - and the grade was up - its now a MS 63 { 2 point jump }
and the coin has been determined to be an Uncentered Broadstrike - which is what all who saw it said it was - & I agree.

Those who know me well, know I have a number of 1921 dated coins as it was my Mom's birth year.

    They had it so long it acquired some toning, Mike?

    Very beautiful and unusual coin, and a great story - thanks for sharing!

    Off Center... If you look at the reverse the base of the S in FIVE CENTS is missing.

    If any of the design elements are missing it's Off Center not a Uncentered Broadstrike.

    Correct. It's off-center.

    This is right on the borderline. I would not argue either call, but I lean towards O/C.

  • Looking at the reverse it looks off center and looking at the obverse it looks broadstruck. How does the diameter of the coin look compared to a normal strike?

    I know you don't care about the grade, but I think 61 was harsh.

    I agree, this would be a close call. I would have to agree with off center since the S in CENTS seems to be just a bit missing.

    This. I don't think it matters one way or another when it comes to what it's worth, though. Nice coin!

    I think it's a slightly tilted O/C strike.

    Nice coin! The toning is nice now. Maybe I ought to send a few of my coins to PCGS to hold for a while. image
