PVC/Corrosion and OGH

Hi Folks!

Quick question:

Going through some coins in the Safety Deposit Box at the bank yesterday and discovered 5 small spots of PVC/ black/green corrosion on a Proof Nickel. It is housed in a first generation rattler.

They are tiny but they are their under 10x loop. Hard to get a good pciture....image

Should I use Reconsideration Service or Regrade Service or nothing at all. Overall a very nice coin, what do you think?

Thanks!

    Pics are needed.

Are you sure they are from PVC? Reason I'm asking as if there was PVC on the coin, I'd think that the damage would be more wide-spread after 20+ years of being in a holder. How long ago did you notice the spots? Have the gotten any worse since you noticed them?

Could they just be carbon spots? Depending on the pictures and value of the coin, conservation might be a good idea.

Guess that was graded too long ago to be grandfathered under their old warranty?

Carbon spots mostly with one with a greenish tinge.... It is a liberty nickel. The spots are the size of a star tip. They have not changed as far as I know. I am just getting better at spotting defects..I am a better grader now. Did not notice them before but they were probably slabbed that way.

Thanks all! Ricko, what would that look like on the PCGS Form? Conservation?

I would send it in under the guarantee. PCGS might very well conserve the coin and mail it back to you or it might downgrade the piece and provide you another remedy under the guarantee.
  • It would be a good idea to give a call and describe the issue and see what they say. If you do this it would also be good to know the answer for others having the same issue.

I don't think there is any grandfathering guarantee for coins that turn. Yes, there is one for copper color (pre-2010) but that was specifically cited when PCGS changed the rules.

As for OP's coin, conservation is the way to go. Black/green corrosion isn't good news. Sounds like surface damage is likely.

The conservation/restoration service is neither reconsideration nor regrade.

There is an evaluation fee regardless of whether PCGS accepts it. And if treatment is done the prior grade is guaranteed and a premium is paid.
    Lance.
