To Certify or Not to Certify: 1885-CC Morgan

Newbie coin collector here, with what is likely a dumb question but one I would like everyone's advice on. I have an 1885-CC Morgan UNC, in a "commemorative" case / box from a US Government issue. The coin looks to be in really good shape, and I know the 1885-CC is a desirable date and mint mark for the Morgan.

My question: is it better to leave the coin in its current case, with the current display box and certificate, but uncertified? Or would it be better to break it out of this case, and submit to one of the certification agencies for authentication and grading? I know the value goes up a good amount if it goes above an MS62, but wasn't sure if there was value in leaving it in the current display. Help!?!

Photos at the links below; not the best in the world, but give you an idea of what I have. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Leave it in the case. Our hosts and the other certification service will grade it in the case. Welcome to the forum.

Not true for PCGS. Coins submitted in a GSA case for grading will be removed from the GSA case and put in a PCGS holder.

How do I submit GSA Carson City Morgan dollars for grading to receive the GSA designation?
GSA dollars can be submitted with raw coins, but must arrive in their GSA holder in order to receive the "GSA" designation on the PCGS label. Send the coins in the acrylic holder only. External packaging, original GSA acrylic holders, and certificates of authenticity will not be returned.

Will "GSA" Carson City Morgan dollars submitted for grading retain the GSA holder?
No. GSA Carson City Morgan dollars submitted for grading will be removed from their GSA holders and go through the grading process as raw coins. You do not have the option of keeping the original holder.

Please leave it as is and enjoy or sell it. As stated she is a lower grade and the price on a 1885cc does not go up much until you get to ms65 and higher. Your coin will not be worth more any way you shake it. Leave it as is.

It doesn't need anymore than what you have. That's good enough for most of us as certification goes (GSA) . The looks of the coin don't seem to warrant the costs associated with third party grading. This is a humble opinion, though strong. I can't see it higher than MS 63+

I'll guess MS-62 or MS-63 based on your obverse photo.

I don't see any need or significant upside commercial benefit to you having it certified by a Third Party Grading Service.

I agree, just leaving it as-is would be fine.

    And welcome to the forums!

Absolutely leave it as is. Better value and it keeps the GSA packaging all together with cert an outer box.

    Hi:

Coin is an MS61, maybe 62. Not worth getting graded. At that grade, the coin will go down in value rather than just leaving it as is in the ungraded GSA case.

PCGS will grade it in the slab, but an MS62 is not worth having graded. This is what their slab looks like:

  • As all others have stated leave that Morgan right where it is. Anyone who collects GSA Morgans will know the value of your coin.

That one will not grade high enough to make the grading worth it. Leave as is.

As others have said...leave it as is....not worth grading. Welcome aboard MKenn18710. Cheers, RickO
