If you could buy a case now....??

What would it be? Any thoughts on the NEXT BIG WINNER that would be a worthwhile investment NOW ~ from the 80's and up??
I have a buddy stocking up on both '88 & '89 Fleer Basketball boxes. I also know of a few hoarding those '93 Upper Deck SP Boxes. How about the '83 Topps Michigan Wrapped Packs or '89 Score Football?..... still good future investments?
I'm stocking up on 1980 thru 1990 BBCE sealed wax and cello boxes from both Topps Baseball and Football when I can keep my wife out of Bloomingdales!
What do you guys and gals think?

    That's an interesting question.

    I have no idea.

I bought a lot of stuff in the early 90s and it's done well - late 70s stuff (76-79).

It would seem that the 80s stuff was very much overproduced?

This is one of my favorite topics.

In my opinion you're not discussing anything new that people haven't thought of 100 times over...those are all nice to haves but blow up BIG WINNERS, I don't think so and can refute each one.

When looking at a next BIG WINNER, you need to look at things that people haven't thought about...what are people in love with now that will be collectors tomorrow?

Soccer and various unsports cards in my opinion...sure vintage stuff will be great forever since it's rare, but give me a case of 2014 Panini World Cup soccer which was the innagural year and contains scarce high end auto's of the best soccer players in the world. I opened a couple cases of those and still have some...they came out at 100 bucks a box or 1100 or so per case...now you can barely find them and the price point is 1650 a case...6 autos out of a 12 box case plus high end parallels make it attractive and will stand the test of time. These are very high end cards and purchased by many all over the world...in 2018 for the next world cup, 2014 will come back strong in my opinion.

I also have seen a dramatic rise in Pokemon type unopened stuff...these types of game cards are loved by millions of kids that will someday be in their 40s. Most of you know of my kid and his success, and those cards continue to rise. Not fun for us sports cards guys, but PSA graded none the less.

I'll take a 10% consulting fee please...haha, of course I want that stuff to do well, I'm also very biased.

Futera Unique is a smart way to go, unopened investment-wise. It is quite a high priced product though.

  • I figured this topic is one at the top of most collectors minds, especially those in the hobby purely for investment. I'm kinda both - I'm in it for fun, but it's nice to pocket a little spending money so the 'fun' is more affordable.
I also knew idea's would be all over the place. I suspect there really is no one sure thing and if we all knew about it now, well, we wouldn't be able to find it or could afford it if we did. But it is interesting to hear what other's think will be the NEXT BIG THING. Perhaps we can come up with a TOP 10 LIST, then 25 years from now, see how accurate it was.

Star and Fleer basketball from 84-89 will continue to climb. Gen X is coming into their top earning years now and Jordan is the one guy everyone wants. I know many will say it is already pricey, but 5-10 years from now we will all be wishing we bought at today's price.

I also think there will be a surge in 80/81 Topps basketball, 2009 Bowman Draft for the Trout RC, 2000 Contenders for Brady RC and 1982 for Ripken RC. Prices always jump disproportionately for the truly elite players.

Because of the massive increase in overall production, I don't believe anything from the 1980s will be the "next big thing." That said, I am a fan of 1983 Topps, 1984 Donruss, the Topps Tiffany sets, and a few of the other limited print run glossy sets of the late 1980s. I believe those all have decent upside.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

If PSA decides to resume grading 80's Star basketball sets, the prices would jump up a lot. I doubt that will happen though.
