PCGS Holders-Different width?

Won a coin at auction and noticed that one off the coins has a PCGS holder that's slightly thicker and heavier and it will not fit in the NGC box.

1st one I've run across like that.

Yes they are new and quite dense like a SEGS holder as you could kill someone it you tossed it at them.

The ridge around the circumference is thicker from front to back, but the real problem is with the taller stacking tabs. I'm tempted to grind 'em down on some of mine.

I recently got one too. I wonder why the change in width and if this is going to be the general holder from this point or some isolated special issue slab.

    I'll say just two things.

This change does not make me happy. The holders do not fit in conventional boxes and protective bags, and in the long run they take up more room in safe deposit boxes.

I just imaged a few for other collectors and the acrylic is clearer and the raised beveled edge seems to let more light in.

Heavier, harder... Like museum quality acrylic.

So NGC slabs are too tall for PCGS boxes and PCGS slabs are too thick for NGC boxes.
Back to cigar boxes for coins again.
What crap we put up with.

I've always been a fan of the ICG slabs - solid, small and stack well. It would be nice if the top TPGs had slabs like that too.
  • The new PCGS holders are slightly thicker (they will fit in a PCGS blue box) but they're about 3 grams lighter than the previous holders.
    I love the 3 P's: PB&J, PBR and PCGS.

Had to check this out. Weighed a few myself and came up with nearly 6 grams lighter for the new, thicker ones.

They won't fit in the PCGS "green boxes" !!! :-)

  • As a collector who is still using old green boxes for my PCGS coins, I'm a little disappointed.

Seems like a good time for someone to market a quality box that will hold both the new and the old PCGS & NGC slabs.

  • Already is done. The blue PCGS boxes hold the newer PCGS holders just fine.
