Seller Sends the Wrong Coin

I'm finding that when I win an auction, there's about a 1-2% chance the seller sends the wrong coin. It's happened to me 4 times in the past year out of maybe 200 won auctions. Today was the 4th time.

For the prior times, my experience has been that the seller has been honest and traded back with me to give me the correct coin and paid the additional shipping costs.

Today, the 4th time, I received a PCGS XF45 1884-S Morgan instead of a PCGS XF45 1885-S Morgan. The 1884-S is a higher priced coins and I like it over the 1885-S. But I'm an honest person so I've emailed the seller about sending the wrong coin. But this may take awhile to fix, although I did tell the seller I'm happy with the 1884-S. When I look at the auction listing, the seller has done the Ebay "out of office" notice until early October.

All the times a seller has sent me the wrong coin, it's been an honest mistake. Probably the seller has many auctions and simply grabs the wrong coin.

So does this happen to you also? (That the seller sends the wrong coin and not a misrepresented coin).
I love the 3 P's: PB&J, PBR and PCGS.

It has, and I'm guilty of it as well. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, things can get mixed up, especially when you have a large number of coins to ship. Fortunately, the time I did it, both people were extremely cool and instead of sending back to me offered to send to the correct person, and I reimbursed them for the postage.

  • Even though the seller has an Ebay "out of office" until early October, the seller was quick to respond to my message. Seller says I can keep the wrong coin that was sent. Cool. I got a coin listed on PCGS at $125 instead of the one I purchased that's listed at $85.

Good for you, that should make your weekend.

I once bought a VF 1914-D Lincoln and received an AU 1914-D $5 (back when gold was 1800). I didn't get the same treatment lol.

I would never recommend having two buyers exchange coins directly. Just have them both send them back to you, then you send them to the correct party and reimburse the postage.

I've shipped the wrong coins twice. Both were low end < $25.
I didn't really want to bother with it, so I just refunded both parties all their money and told them to keep what ever that got with my compliments.

All were happy, and I've learned to be more careful.

I only win one or two auctions a year, but the seller has never once sent the wrong coin.

Just happened to me, fortunately on a low value coin. I had to go thru ebay to get a full refund. I'm wondering if this might have something to do with the caliber of the sellers, especially since the advent of the free listings. I'm not saying that free listings is necessarily a bad thing-I have a couple of items for sale that would not be listed if I had to pay to list them.

Back in 2007 or so, I cherrypicked a half dime variety that was worth $600 more than I payed for it. It was an 1840 No Drapery in MS63/64. The seller "accidentally" sent an 1840 With Drapery that was in AU58 details, cleaned. Then they got royally ticked off when I said I wanted to return it because it wasn't the coin pictured. "Well, just send it back then. It's not rocket science," they said in the email. So I sent the coin back, at which point they said they were going on vacation and would refund my money in 6 weeks. A Paypal complaint convinced them to come back from vacation early. That's my one story. They are still on eBay and have changed their name so people won't recognize them. Sadly, I accidentally fell for this name change and bought another coin from them last year. Cleaned, bright white, hairlined POS that got returned immediately, which looked like a pretty, original toner in their doctored photos. I could not believe it when I saw the return address on the envelope and it was the same outfit in Florida. I was surprised I actually got my money back both times.

The 4 times its happened to me in the past year, it's always been a mega-seller with Feedback in 5 digits. I think it's simply a case of having so many auctions going it's easy to grab the wrong slab for the envelope.

That's probably be part of it but I think the quality and integrity of the sellers has gone down of late. I've had to return more coins (I'm not a chronic returner of coins-I rarely do) in the last couple of years than I did in the previous 15.

    .
ive sent the wrong coin a few times. worked out 95% of the time.

had a seller send me a rifle scope by accident. hehe - prob just swapped shipping labels as ive done before.

buyers have been very patient and understanding and because of the positivity that comes from these interactioms, it is almost worth making the mistakes just to see the good and honest nature come out. i wont make the errors on purpose though.

"seller is away until XXX" says it all, every time I take even a few days off, somehow, I mix up a few labels, in a hurry to get things caught up and things get mixed up

I'm guilty of having performed that infraction. Fortunately, both times it was for inexpensive, less than $30 coins. Instead of going through the hassle of return, wait and then ship again, I just told the buyer(s), keep the coin and the correct one will be mailed out immediately.

It happened to me once. Seller just sent the right one and I sent the wrong one back.
