Mount Rushmore Part 2 - 70's baseball cards

Using the theme for football above was wondering earlier today without having seen the football post. So for the 1970's baseball if you had to pick (4) cards to be on Mt Rushmore who do you put on it? Pretty sure I know 2 of them and probably a 3rd but the 4th might be tough. Fire away - will reveal my choices later.

I think the 75 Brett is the number one card of the 70's. After that it gets harder, mainly because I'm not a fan of the multplayer RC's and a lot of great HOFers are on those cards in this decade. So, while I generally think RCs should be on Mt. Rushmores, I will add some non RCs to this decade because of the multiplayer card problem.

    75 Brett
    78 Murray
71 Munson or Ryan -- I think one card from this set needs to be part of a 70's Rushmore.
74 Schmidt or Winfield -- I think Schmidt was the better player but RC vs 2nd year card makes this race closer. If he was featured on his own RC then Schmidt would be alongside Brett as the two kicks from this decade.

  • Doesn't matter but now everyone has posted this, I'm a buyer of PSA 9's at 8x the previous price, just cause.

    Here is mine though

    Brett
    Schmidt
    Ozzie
    Clemente 73
  • 71 Munson
    73 Schmidt
    75 Brett
    75 Yount

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona.

    71 Munson
    75 Brett
    75 Yount
    79 Ozzie

Can we add degree of difficulty by making them OPC versions or 75 minis?

I'm sure these won't be the most common picks, but here are mine with rationale...

When I think of 70s baseball, two dominant teams come to mind, the Reds and As, so these two teams must be represented:
76 Bench - probably the best Reds card of the decade
73 Reggie Jackson - just because I like goofy cards and am not as familiar with As cards to pick out a Bench equivalent

79 Ozzie - 75 Brett or Yount could be thrown in here as well, but tried to pick the best solo RC of the decade
70 Nolan - High numbered stars are the beast of collecting early-70s sets, my choice for that representative. Really wanted to go with a 72 high number, but those Traded banners are annoying.

Since it's a Rushmore concept, I will leave off horizontal cards and multi-player cards. That makes choosing much easier. I also like the idea of two Padres, so I will go with:

    71 Ryan
    74 Winfield
    75 Brett
    79 Ozzie

Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

    I'd go with:

    71 Thurmon Munson
    74 Hank Aaron
    76 George Brett
    79 Ozzie Smith

If a player isn't limited to only one card on the list, I'd put the 75 Brett on the list instead of the Ozzie.

78 Molitor/Trammell is my runner up... was always amazed with more than one star being on the same rookie card (it's why the Bird/Magic RC is my favorite basketball card).
