NGC Details thoughts??

So I recently sent some coins in to have graded that looked cleaned. Although I prefer PCGS over NGC I wasn't sure what PCGS would do with a coin that was cleaned. The coins came back AU/XF Details (improperly cleaned/obv scratched). I guess I'm happy knowing that I was correct as far as the condition but next time i would like to see them in a PCGS holder. Any similar experiences? Recommendations for next time??

What are the coins? It really does not matter whose holder they are in if they are problem coins, especially if they are fairly common coins.

An exception could be: 1884-S Morgan Uncirculated details cleaned. It is worth way more even in the details slab than raw because of the giant jump in price to uncirculated. There are many other examples like the above.

Perhaps it is just me, but...I would not send in knowingly cleaned coins.

All the small gold is worth more slabed than raw as it was counterfeited so much you should get your money back because the coins are authenicated now.
PCGS has the same type of service. BTW either is OK go with what is cheapest for known details items IMO.

Several of those are very small and easily damaged by accident or handling. So good to have them placed in a protective environment...

Past that, what's the purpose here? An impaired coin isn't magically going to be worth more in PCGS plastic than NGC. It's still impaired.

Unless they are exceptional dates, a cleaned AU is worth something like VF money. So the $1 are worth, what, maybe $225 each. Spend another $30 on grading over the $30 you've already spent and you're in the hole unless gold hits $3000 an ounce...

I would take a chance on these 4 and send them to PCGS myself.
  • Can i send them in the NGC holders?

It is worth doing if the coin is question is rare and valuable IF there is a question as to its authenticity.

It also provides peace of mind for classic rare coins that still have value once they have autheticated. For example I've seen 1796 Quarters and Chain Cents in "details" holders that previously would have gone into body bags. It is better for those coins to be slabs given the number of Chinese counterfeits. The Chinese will make anything to order. I've even seen an 1802 over 0 "half cent" with the old reverse (a rare coin) in "Gen Chinese BU" and a "1796 half cent struck over a large cent planchet."
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

It is always a good idea to have gold coins certified by one of the major TPGs. Counterfeit gold, especially the $1 & $3 coins were heavily counterfeited back in the 1970's and early 1980's. Many, if not most, of the counterfeits of that era have the proper gold content because they were made from melted down US $20 gold coins. I'm sure many of them are still around.
    All glory is fleeting.
