I have a couple in my misc slab box and they are pure garbage.
  • Anybody can buy slabs, put coins in them and call themselves a TPG. At several local coin shows I went to last spring, there was a large table with 2 guys who were selling slabbed coins of some unknown TPG. Even though the shows were very crowded, hardly anyone was at their table. Afterwards I tried looking up their grading company online and couldn't find any mention of it anywhere. I don't remember the name of their TPG any more. The funny thing was that some of their coins had grades like MS40 and MS50. I guess I could have stopped and talked with them to learn more about their TPG, but I didn't.
    I love the 3 P's: PB&J, PBR and PCGS.

Coins in third world slabs should be treated like raw coins.

According to their website, they have been in business since 2000 and have a grading services price schedule for submissions.
  • Last spring I sold on EBay a raw 1909-VDB cent that was in AU condition for $12. A month later I got a private message from the happy buyer that he sent it to some unfamiliar TPG and it came back AU-58. Good for him!

I was at the US Mint in Philadelphia the other day and as I recall at the gift shop they were selling coins graded by that company.
They use an oversize holder some with multi coins in them.
One that caught my eye was a complete set of type nickels but did not include a shield nickel, and a set of re-processed cents

The only company I have seen using ANGS is a "self-slabber" and not a real grading company.

Wow, endorsed by the US Mint. How many other TPGs were in the Mint gift shop?

Hadn't heard of them before today, but at Goldberg lot viewing this morning I saw a 1892-S Morgan Dollar graded MS66 by ANGS. The Goldberg catalog gave their grade estimate of the coin as AU50 cleaned and I thought that was being generous. That should tell you all you need to know about this "grading company."

No but I used to frequent a tavern named "Ang's". She could grade MS70 even today.

Most of the "self-slabbers" arose after his book was printed.

These outfits are what I call, "Uncle Elmer's Grading Services" (UEGS). "Uncle Elmer" used to be in business to serve the bottom feeders on eBay until eBay cracked down and only allowed PCGS and NGC to be called grading services. Now "Uncle Elmer" probably spends his time at flea markets.

What was the name of that service that had the cheep little holders with the green inserts? They were worst than a broken clock. At least the clock was right twice a day.

The main one I remember with green inserts was ICG. It's a shame they weren't more successfully because I quite like their holders.

It looks like they got their co. name via the first 2 letters, AN from ANACS, and the last 2 letters, GS, from PCGS.

No, it's not ICG. The inserts I'm talking about are the part the holds the coin in place. The slabs were smaller and thinner than the NGC and PCGS holders.

I'm sure that somewhere there's an ANGS slab thats accurately graded. Just never seen one myself. I call them blind squirrel grading companies... as in even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut.

I think I posted my 3 die algorithm for grading mint state coins... glue six on the table next to a 2, roll one die and add them together. And of course there's the Four die algorithm for coins you're not sure are mint state: glue a five next to a three, roll two dice and add them all together.

I once bought a Hard Times token in an ACG holder when I was dealer. ACG got the grade right, but I cracked it out anyway.
