It takes a village...to harpoon a whale.

I was born in 71. One of my many projects has been a wax pack collection of BB, FB, and BK from birth year thru 89. Football run was completed at National with a 71 pack. And while I still need a 71T and an 86F for BK, they are easier to find.

It was really the 71BB that's been my White Whale.

They are rarely available and come with a significant price tag. I'd been tracking the "one" available on eBay for months now. Even if it's a little worn. It was priced high, but had a BO. I first reached out to several trusted board members who all validated the seller as legit. With that question out of the way it was just waiting for a 5x to coincide with available budget...and then hope that my BO would be accepted.

Then my buddy Bob (begsu) recently posted a topic on the seller. Which not only confirmed what I'd already been told but highlighted that PFB (Peter) is close with the seller. Coincidentally, Peter had posted on BST in an area where I could help.

We largely worked out our deal, but I was able to inquire about the 71 pack and Peter reached out to the seller on my behalf and after a few days he helped me work out what would essentially become a 3-way trade. Each party receiving a pack(s), with one person taking some cash as well.

Here it is:

A huge thanks to Peter and Scott (dropthepuck20) for making this happen. A smooth trade I think for all, and the largest trade I've ever participated in.

I'm just not sure this happens without the community. So a thanks to everyone who participates here.

I'm simply over the moon.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Congrats on the pick-up! You are correct - that's the only 1971 pack I have seen on eBay for at least two years. As others have said, Peter and Scott are good guys.

Jim, that is a fantastic pack and great write up. I don't know Scott, but I do know Peter and he is top notch, as are you. Great to see a couple great board members come together to make something like this happen.

Thanks boys. It's a great addition and puts an end to the hunt.

I only saw one at National, and it wasn't for sale there, but for an upcoming auction, and it was a PSA 8. I also heard multiple people at the BBCE booth inquire about a 71BB pack. So it was high time to take the plunge.

Just hard to believe that an 86F BK pack, which is much easier to source, that almost surely won't contain a Jordan, will cost just as much or more.

Might have to confine my BK run to Topps only.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

  • Awesome pack to own. I am not into pack collecting but I certainly understand the appeal that that year holds. Congrats!

Very nice pickup! I was able to pickup my '71 pack a couple of years ago with some board help as well.

I don't believe that I can compare my unopened collecting experiences to date to a transaction of this kind. Not only the calibre of product, but the manner in which it was acquired. You must be elated! Enjoy your awesome addition. Kudos to the collector comraderie of the people that helped make this happen for you.
Conundrum - Loving my unopened baseball card collection....but really like ripping too
