1838 Dime MS65 in PCGS V1.1 Rattler CAC NEWP

ProofmorganProofmorgan Posts: 758 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just picked this up on DLRC Auctions. I fought someone very hard for this coin. You don't see many in a package like this. I also paid 25% over PCGS Guide. I was about to get away with it for Guide price until someone got involved in the last few minutes. Could it go 66? Either way I will leave it as is.

Cool type coin in a cool holder. Now keep it quiet so more people don't catch on. image

If that coin was higher end (65+) or had a good shot at 66 I don't know why anyone would leave this as such. 25% premium doesn't seem like enough premium if the coin had a legit shot. I'd pay 50% to the next grade up if I felt it was a near lock. I'm sure others would too.

In checking PCGS price guide you paid 65+ money. There's another $3K or so to MS66. So it doesn't seem to me that other bidders saw this as a 66. No way I'd let a rattler, with a good shot to upgrade get away for a 25% premium. It could go 66. It's probably a rare package because unlike most other rattler 65's, no one liked this enough yet to resubmit it. Either that or it came out of an older time collection and was just never tried. A coin really worthy of an upgrade should have brought much closer to 66 money....at least that's the case at a Heritage or Stacks/Bowers auction. It could have been the DLRC auction too. Need better pics of the fields to evaluate it as a possible 66. The photos here are not clear enough. Looks to have secondary toning to me. The no drapery dimes are quite available in MS65 and MS66. And in my experience the quality difference between those 2 grades is not all that large. It's worth a LOT more in a new 66 holder than this current rattler with green bean. A 3-1 or 4-1 upside vs. downside.

I'd get it reholdered just to get it out of a crappy holder.image

In speaking with DLRC, it had never been stickered before they received it. That just gives me the sense that whoever owned it before didn't try to squeeze every cent out of it. In addition, it definitely hasn't been sent in for multiple regrades as one might expect for a big jump to the next grade. Makes me wonder where it came from.....

Either way, I think it's pretty neat.

Dimeman....I knew you couldn't resist ha ha

Congrats! I, like many others, avoid DLRC because they simply refuse to take proper photos of coins. It's annoying.
That said, I hope you got a good one there.

Before the days of reconsideration, any regrade would have meant losing this holder. Hence, it hasn't been reviewed prior to 2014/2015. Is there a way of knowing today if reconsideration/rattler service was ever used? It may not have been sent in before if it's obvious it has little chance to upgrade....and maintaining the old holder makes the most sense. It probably would have gotten more attention (and a higher price) in another auction. You probably have done fine. I don't see it being worth less than you paid. And the upgrade potential is still there just by the fact that it is a rattler, and looks pretty clean with good luster. One obvious field scuff or graze back in the rattler days would have kept this from a MS66 grade.....not so today though. If I understand the reconsideration service correctly, there was zero downside for the owner to resubmit this. And why wouldn't they unless they didn't know?

The 9 o clock is just the tab that holds the coin.

Dimeman, is it a rare variety? I know of another variety with a squiggly line above the word dime. You know much more about these than I.

    Nice coin!

With thousands of recently graded coins for sale, it seems impossible to me DLRC would not have sent this in for reconsideration with that kind of a jump. That doesn't mean it still does not have a chance, and I also would send it in if it can go 66. If the coin is really a 66, who cares about the holder? Now a Gold CAC on this, nope, leave it alone.

I agree about it being a (really) nice dime.

Choosing the lesser of two evils; current holder versus the new three prong holder (yuck), if anything, I would leave it as is and submit it to CAC and see what they think.

ARGH! Get it in the right holder please. Much better in a 66 or 66+ holder.......than in a rattler (YUCK) with 20 beans!!

I've got a really good eye & can't tell squat from those pics...

Not sure how others are seeing upgrade potential image

Hopefully it arrives non lackluster from having been uber dipped.

That coin is really hammered and clean. I really like it.

I don't understand why, sometimes, DLRC takes good or representative images and, then other times, they use this weird lighting. Makes you wonder what they might be trying to hide? But it still looks like a great coin to me.

I saw it in their last email. That may be what drew attention to it. Good for them but bad for you (the bidder).

I think that it's a good quality pickup, in any event, and I think that you'll be happy with it.

I'm glad that you were able to fend off the other bidders, too.

How can you tell it's not correctly graded?

Many coins remained in the rattlers as they had absolutely no upgrade potential.

Large pic of obverse is at least a full stop overexposed. Can't comment re its detail. Agree w Roadrunner re secondary toning. In my limited experience, you're going to have a hard time getting a gem business strike of a coin like this with secondary toning to upgrade.

Yes, it is an original V 1.1 rattler. The 1.0 was made a short time before, only difference was the angle of the "/" being sharper. The green perforated ones we see often came after these.

That was the main focus of this thread, or what I took from the OP, but it ventured off into a discussion of plastic and stickers. Its a cool holder, I know of only two dozen or so.
