I received a three more cards for my set this week and have two more on the way. Once I get the two that are coming I'll need eight cards to finish the set. I also need to upgrade the Musial. From here out my progress will slow down a lot. Right now I only see one card listed anywhere that I am willing to put in my set. That one is priced too high and the seller won't come down any. All others are too far off centered for me. It looks like centered Stan Musial and Duke Snider cards will be tough to find. Nellie Fox will also be a tough one.
Congrats on the pickups James. You are making steady progress. This set is very cool looking. I love the size of the set too. If I ever do a baseball set, something this size would be what I go for.
James ... great looking cards ... thanks for the update.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Card for card, this set has the nicest group of portraits. I mean, these portraits just sparkle. They were so well shot. Even Billy Martin, with his typical intense look of a male tiger ready to pounce, is terrific. Coming off his 53 World Series performance where he destroyed the Brooklyn Dodgers, I feel certain a lot of kids would have wanted the green series just to get the Billy Martin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Congratulations once more, James, on your building a world cl***** PSA 8 set. Also, thank you for sharing scans with us of your beauties. Time consuming, but worth the h*****le; that has a way of promoting the set to others. How are the uninformed going to find out about Red Hearts lest collectors like yourself enlighten them?-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you located an original advertisement to help display your set? Or a least a downloaded crystal-clear scan of the ad to make a reprint? A period can of Red Heart Dog Food would be charming as well. Just ideas, bro. Nice going. ---Indiana Jones (Brian Powell)-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS While I did not devote a chapter to my book on postwar regional / food issues to the 1954 Red Heart, I gave them some coverage in the conclusion. I ran out of space, as well as needed some good interviews of former kids who collected them at the time. I got my set, sadly now gone, from Bruce Yeko at Wholesale Cards Co. in about 1969-70. Though the set price makes me even sick today, they were so beautiful and well worth including in my collection.
Brian, I have seen the advertisements and a can label on Ebay but haven't picked either up. They are both pretty cool but I doubt that I'll buy either.
Time for another small update. I picked up the Billy Cox and Sammy White a couple weeks ago. There is a nicely centered PSA 8 McDougald on Ebay that I have been watching. It is priced at $300 which is about $110 over current VCP. I was planning to use my Ebay Bucks after the first of the year to buy the card. That would have put my cost right at VCP. Well, that plan changed when this PSA 8.5 McDougald became available for a few dollars less than the PSA 8 is priced at. Within minutes of seeing it listed I bought it. It just arrived today. With the addition of these 3 cards I now need 4 to complete the set and 1 that needs to be upgraded. All but 1 are available now but they are too far off-center for my taste. 1 is close and I may end up with it if another doesn't show up soon.
It has been a while since I updated this thread. I finally upgraded the PSA 7 Musial to an 8. The centering is not as good as I would like it to be but I haven't seen any better ones. Same with the Yost. I still need 3 cards to complete the set.
I have a pretty big update this time. In a PWCC auction a couple days ago they broke up a high grade set. All three cards that I needed to finish my set plus several that I could upgrade to PSA 8.5 and 9 were in the auction . I needed Nellie Fox, Jim Hegan and Duke Snider. The Fox and Snider in the auction were PSA 8 and the Hegan was 8.5. The Snider is more off-center than I would like but this in the only one that I have seen pop up in several months. I won the Fox and Snider. I figured the Hegan would sell for around $350-400. No 8.5s have sold in a long time so VCP didn't have anything on them. The card ended up at $630. I was the underbidder. I did upgrade 4 of my PSA 8s to 8.5 and 9. I upgraded the Schoendienst a couple weeks ago. I hope I can find a Hegan so I can finish this set. I'll watch the set registry to see if someone upgrades their Hegan. and see if I can buy the one they upgrade.
I finally found the last card to finish this set. The Jim Hegan was a tough card to find in high grade. I also upgraded the Al Dark to a PSA 8.5. The set is currently at # 8 on the PSA Registry. I will probably keep looking for cards to upgrade the ones I have.
Wow James ... awesome accomplishment. Now enjoy them!

Mike, I have seen that advertisement piece but never paid attention to the pennants. Do you have the complete set?
James
Sure do James. In nice shape also.
As I said, I think these "premiums" probably come from an importer who offers them to different companies who are looking for a promotion?
One of the other offers is for a charm bracelet which looks a lot like the one given away by Quaker featuring Babe Ruth. Except there's also a "heart" in this one.
BTW, I know one can mail in for all the cards in 3 series but were the cards also offered somehow with the product at the store?
From what I know about this set, it was available only by mail. I have read that they were available for several years after 1954. I'm not sure what the last year was.

Geez that's a beautiful set. I sure appreciate all the centered cards - a very hard thing to find.
Congratulations buddy!!!
Have you ever seen this promotion?
One of the items is of interest to me since I have a full mini pennant set attributed to Tom's Peanuts that I haven't been able to verify.
When I saw this sheet, and compared the pennants to mine, the similarity was compelling.
Here's an example (Cleveland - and notice it even has the "arrow" to the right like my pennant!) which highly resembles the 2 league set in the ad:
These pennants are the same dimensions from the ad: 2 1/2 X 6"
Of the 10 they show, they resemble my pennants perfectly. So, since I couldn't find anything on Tom's Peanuts - I'm attributing them to Red Heart.
Though I will have to say, it's very possible that the company that supplies these premiums may have made them for both Tom's and Red Heart.

If you're interested in "companion" pieces, the mail-in offer sheet is up for sale on eBay right now.
That's our own Bob Lemke's auction I believe.
Mike, I have seen that advertisement piece but never paid attention to the pennants. Do you have the complete set?
James
Thanks for all the nice comments.
