Buff peeps.....Why didn't this Buff cross??

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,023 ✭✭✭✭✭
I recently tried to cross this Buff to PCGS at MS63 or greater. They said no go. Graded NGC 63 currently. It has nice luster contrary to my crappy pics. I'm not seeing anything other than the toning that is a distraction and the tone is darker in pics then in hand. Does PCGS hold tone against MS Buff's these days? It's a very tough DDR-003 example, in case you are wondering why I'm trying to cross a low dollar coin. Worth a crack out try? Opinions?

Toning is not a distraction to me, but in the pics it does have the look of an AU58. JMHO

Going to have to agree here. There is flatness on the Buffalo's hind leg....at least from the photo it seems that way.

The toning I see on this Buff would not hold it back. Remember luster rules the roost when it comes to grading. From what I can see from your images it would be a weaker strike, I can not judge the luster from images. If ya notice the hipbone and flank area is a bit flat along with the ridge line of fur on the Buffalo's shoulder area running down his leg being a bit incomplete. Remember the highest points of the coin that shows rub is also the last area to fill out when struck, meaning the hipbone and flank area.
This is what I see from the images. I hope it helps.

Thanks for the opinions Guys. I see no wear, just weak strike in hand. The luster in hand is 100% Mint State and not a subdued AU type. I guess she'll just stay in the current plastic! No big deal. Thanks again!!

Here's a 66 for comparison. The luster on this one is booming....

From other 64-65's I've seen I could believe this one would grade
MS63, evidently not here obviously. The 31S is softly struck which shows up
on the high points. Photos are one of the worst ways to make a decision
regarding grades as they offer no angles and no changes in lighting.
I believe I would leave it as it is in the current plastic.
    Good luck,
    Jim

Looks like a MS coin from here. The luster is a little flat and dull-that could explain it.

It's probably worth the same as PCGS MS62 money. So not a big risk in cracking it out if you're sure it won't come back AU58.

Since the value is going to be in the variety and not the grade I see no downside to cracking it out, assuming it is not attributed by ngc.

Perhaps they don't recognize the variety?

I don't think anyone will properly attribute it until it appears in the upcoming Cherrypicker's guide.

    .
that kind of ambient light generally kills a coin pic.

    suggest trying better images.

the sun and ambient natural light can be used but carefully.

the cross at a grade i say
    probably turns them off
    yes...no...?

i bet it'd be in a pcgs holder if it was sent in under cross at any grade
