Thoughts about the 2016 National in AC

I briefly remember the last AC National. I can say, it was my first National and I did not know what to expect. From what I heard during the show from dealers was not favorable for sales and the location might have distracted buyers. The past couple in Baltimore, Chicago and Cleveland have been much better.

What are your thoughts?

I think they should come back to Anaheim. Us West Coast collectors haven't been feeling the love!

I'll be there next year as it's just a few hours from me. I don't think the setting is as significant as just meeting up with friends and fellow collectors and having a good time. But I am not a dealer. Plus I can play the ponies on CCTV with Douglas. LOL..

Nice Tim! That's the way to play it. For the expense involved on travel, you need to either have a lot to spend to make it worth the trip, or be content in the experience itself...which is awesome.

    Looking forward already.

I remember this article. I remember being very disappointed reading it, as it pretty much says that a National on the West Coast is unlikely at best. The only National I have ever been to was one in Anaheim and I would love to see it return. It would be nice for the West Coast guys to get a short trip to the National at least once a decade!

Probably in minority but I'm glad the show is going back to Atlantic City. I've always enjoyed going there and not just for the gaming. Will probably take wife with me and have a great time like I did when it was there the last time. I know that many of the dealers probably would rather go elsewhere due to the competition for the dollars but I always have separate pots of money for my collectibles and for my gaming. And I live in Parma Ohio right next to cleveland and the IX center and would rather make the ride east then see another show close to home.....just my random thoughts early this morning upon my return from work.....in fact I didn't even know the show was in AC next year until I saw this post.
  • It sounds like the organizers of the National wouldn't be opposed to a West Coast National but the Anaheim and San Fran venues reserve the right to cancel the event without recourse if a certain number of room nights are not booked at participating hotels. This stipulation makes it impossible for them to consider either as a venue. Is there another expo/convention center on the west coast, with 500,000 square foot of contiguous space, that doesn't have the above stipulations?

I know a dealer who hates the Atlantic City shows because his experience has been that too much money ends up on the blackjack tables as opposed to the the dealers tables. His worst shows have been in AC.
  • The National location is voted on by the dealers as you know. In 2012, it was supposed to be in Cleveland, but Baltimore was the one time replacement for Cleveland for that year. The management for the Baltimore Convention Center is very difficult to deal with, so Baltimore will not be on the regular rotation.

Last year was Cleveland, of course and this year it is in Chicago. There was a vote for the 2016 National between Anaheim and Atlantic City. Many of the dealers voted Atlantic City (which won the vote of course) since the dealers didn't want the west coast site. The reason Atlantic City was even considered (vs Anaheim) in this last vote was because basically the National show promoters will pay next to nothing for the Atlantic City convention center for next years National. I heard the 2003 National was horrible for dealers according to what most of the dealers honestly said. But, they were willing to try it again in 2016. So Atlantic City is going to be 2016. The short version is that the National will rotate between Chicago and Cleveland for the next 15 or so years with a NEW or DIFFERENT city on occasion every 3 or so years. Other cities such as St. louis, Kansas City, Dallas, Boston, and others have been mentioned as those on occasion cities.

I personally think the Atlantic City show will be a total disaster, for a variety of reasons. Most west coast collectors will not attend, so that will eliminate a lot of the collectors. However most New Yorkers and Philly guys who went to the Baltimore shows by train, will definately drive to the Atlantic City show.

But we will find out next year.

Thanks for that link dtkk. I was under the impression that they weren't going to the west coast because on a strong dealer voting block keeping in the Midwest & East. Looks like the requirement of selling a minimum of rooms is preventing them from selling any at all.

I do feel bad for the west coast collectors who are always shut out. For this to be a true "National" it needs to hit all areas in the country. And I say this as a resident of NE Ohio who loves that it comes to Cleveland so frequently.

    Looking forward to 2018!

I don't think Boston will ever get it, just like New York because of some union crap about their guys having to handle all merchandise coming in and out of the venue which will of course be paid by the dealers themselves. No thanks! I can bring my own inventory in to my booth.

San Diego would be a great location. It's been good enough for Comicon for many years.

I'll be up for Atlantic City next year, God willing. Sports cards and black jack, all for a 2.5 hour drive! Don't know how much I will spend there - I remember bringing home a lot of money from the 2012 National in Baltimore as prices were pretty inflated, but just looking at some of those items was a lot of fun.

I think the 8,000-10,000 hotel sale thing is a cop out. How many attendees are there for the National? Aren't there at least 1000 dealers and exhibitors by themselves? It seems like selling 8-10,000 hotel rooms should not be a difficult task. San Diego would be a great location. As another poster said Comic-Con sells out 125,000 tickets every year in days of pre-sale before the show even starts.

I think the dealer vote is a sham- it's more about where the promoters get the best deal.
Atlantic City is going to be a debacle, as it was last time it was there.
I don't see it ever being on the west coast again. Cleveland/Chicago with occasionally another city thrown in.
The hobby needs new promoters to take over.

Build it they will come ! I am going ! The market is strong and all the big dealers will be there. How do dealers pass up a 5 day show with all the foot traffic the Nationals provide

Plenty be of collectors on the east coast
I didn't go to Chicago this year because of the location and a guy from the mid west won't go to AC next year. It all evens out ! I went to the AC show last time and did very well with my purchases

    AMEN to this.

For now I'm planning to go to AC, but I think it's going to be a complete disaster. While there is a large block of East Coast dealers who will like it because of reduced travel costs, I have no doubt that tons of $ will be lost to the casinos. If pricing strategy is anything like it was here in Chicago, when people like me can't buy cards at prices they feel like are reasonable they will inevitably end up sending that money in the casino instead.

I went to the last National in Anaheim and I thought it was fantastic. I walked out of there with a ton of cool items that year, stuff I didn't see here in Chicago. Plus, you've got the other draws like Universal and Disney, the beach, it's a great location for a multi-purpose trip. Chicago has been great for that as well.

I thought years and years ago there was an East Coast AND a West Coast National, is that right? I'm definitely in favor of trying to bring it back to California.

And honestly, if we're going to pick casino towns, just go to Vegas. It shouldn't be too hard to get players to show up to sign there.

ComicCon is a different animal altogether. I just went to a mini-one in Houston last week, it had probably 2-3x the attendance of the last Tristar show.

I can't wait for the AC show. Card show during the day and poker table at night. My perfect combination.

I'm pretty much boycotting the 'National' these days due to their complete write-off of the western half of the US. How can you call a show a National when it's only hosted in a few cities in the Eastern half of the US? I agree with Anthony that the dealer vote is an excuse. Tri-Star seems to have little problem getting national dealers to attend the SF show.

I hope to make my first National in 2017 when it's back in Chicago. I would love to see it in Anaheim, but I would think that Las Vegas would be the best option based on accessibility. The only downside would be the fear that people would drop spending money in the Casino (although, I would think the same consideration can be made for Atlantic City). In my case, at least, I would end up dropping more money at Disneyland with the family than I would at a casino.
