Do you know the difference between PCGS reconsideration and regrade?

I'm surprised how many CU members don't get it.
When do you choose reconsideration vs. regrade? What are the differences in cost?
Is any other PCGS service so misunderstood as reconsideration?

I get it just fine. There are times to use reconsideration service, and it has nothing to do with old holders.

Down-grade and get compensation

Perhaps there is. Let's hear it. I'd like to learn something.

When you have a coin with borderline toning and you don't want it to bag (since the guarantee does not have a toning premium)?
<< <i>Seems to me that the Reconsideration Service has everything to do with old holders. >>
PCGS also said something about preserving CAC stickers. I suppose if you have a gold stickered coin and you want to upgrade the piece, it might make for nice assurance that you won't loose the gold sticker and won't receive an upgrade.

and likely a less chance of upgrade since they don't get to see the coin raw.

reconsideration for full point, 10% reconsideration either and 10% reconsideration for suffix. If you are trying to get a
full point upgrade IMHO you have a better shot at it sending in a + coin and the grader can see it's a + coin. If it's a
liner he's deciding if the coin deserves the 1/2 point upgrade. I've made many pop 1/0's this way. If I'm submitting
at a show I submit as regrade, if I'm sending to the office I submit reconsideration and I always use regular tear.
<< <i>Todd, the coins are in PCGS holders, not NGC holders for the Reconsideration Service, so visibility should not be a problem. >>
I don't buy that based on results. I think you have a better shot with regrades.
<< <i>90% of what I send in I send under reconsideration. I've done very well with it. 60% I send as reconsideration for +, 20%
reconsideration for full point, 10% reconsideration either and 10% reconsideration for suffix. If you are trying to get a

With all due respect, you are wasting money using the reconsideration service and may not be benefiting as much.
Those who were around when reconsideration was announced by DW may remember PCGS's reason for introducing it: Because many collectors didn't want to lose old or special holders and stickers if the coins weren't going to upgrade.
I'm sure there are lots of anecdotal stories about successes with one service over the other. Mine, over the last 14 months, is 34 upgrades (full point or more) from 104 regrades. I have no way of knowing how many might have upgraded using reconsideration. I suspect fewer because PCGS didn't have to grade through plastic and gaskets. This much I know. I didn't have to pay hundreds of dollars in premium fees for 34 upgrades.
