I saw that PREMIUM on that one. It is not something for me, even if I were able to do it.
As long as the new owner is happy is all that matters. It looks nice, that's for sure.

Those Coronet Collection Morgans that led the auction off were pretty incredible (most were not toners, just as near perfect as you can find for most of the dates).

The Eliasberg/Coronet 1892-s PCGS MS67 at $380K was pretty impressive. The MS68+ examples of the 1885 ($34K) and the 1885-cc ($115K) seemed like big enough money. Since these ended at the 1893-0, the 1893-s and later coins must be in the next auction.

Way more than I would ever pay, even if I was into toners.

That is a lot of money for a one sided toner. I've examples with two sides, but it was back in the 1980s.

How about this one although I know it's on the wrong side.

I bid on that one and would have gone up to around $2500 or maybe $3K but I got blown out of the water! There were some exceptional prices realized for great toned coins last night.

WOW......6x estimate! And there must have been an underbidder (or two) pushing the deal. This is an Aurora Boreallis type of Morgan toner. Perhaps he will chime in with some pertinent info?

That's not the first silly price paid for a generic date Morgan. Back in February Legend sold another for the same price of $14,100.



That's 100 times the FMV of an MS65 1882-S Morgan. That's some mighty expensive tarnish.

This is a national well known dealer told me " most collectors love beautifully rainbow toned coins but rarely you can find any to pay real premium. When you have these coins, you have to send them to major auction houses."

I love the chorus of overpaid/ buried comments from those the don't even play in this market. I shake my head at the dissmissive comments. Weak, but they are entitled to their opinions even if it's out of there realm of expertise.

Edited to add of course premium toners should be sold at auction. Price discovery is healthy.

I opened the bid and left healthy max bids for that and the 42. They didn't hold. I was at my bachelor party so I want able to participate live. I would have been caught up in the bidding otherwise. I viewed both of them and they were awesome

I saw the '42 Walker in 67+ at the April PCGS Vegas show. That coin was a stunner in person and it had a $5K price tag with it. Lots of red on the coin, which is not a usual color I've seen on toners. Looks like it went for a bit more with the juice in this auction.

Hmmm...I never realized one could be an "expert" in overpaying for "purdy" colors on very, very, very common coins.

A simple question, but with so many twists and turns there's no easy way to answer it. Be careful what you ask for because it could cost you big time when the coin doesn't turn out like you (or they) expected. I would imagine that color premiums are even more subjective than grading itself.

I have to say that I am no good at pricing color premiums. I know what I like, and it often matches what the color people like, but when it comes to putting prices on it, I'm like a guy with a 1980 edition of The Red Book. Ninety-nine percent of the time I will come in too low.

So his point of view couldn't possibly be based on the knowledge of the premium toner market? The toner you posted I wouldn't pay a premium for either. It lends me to believe that you don't understand this segment of the market which is ok as there are many I don't get either. The difference is a wouldn't go out of my way to comment on them or offer expertise were there isn't any. Then again you have a pebble in your shoe for Legend.

You are entitled to your opinions as stated. You are not a toner guy I get it. You cant wrap your ahead around the fact that some will be pay up for uncommon common dates. I get it. Aesthetics play the determining role in many collecting strategies. Sometimes it separates good collections from great collections in the eye of the beholder.

It seems like a few of the wildly toned Morgans that sell for the big bucks have a fair amount of that cool aguagreen that you do not see very often. The posted 80-S has it.

FWIW, whenever I was a kid in the 1980's toning premiums on Morgan were just as hotly debated as they are today. The difference is that in those days people would be calling anyone crazy to pay $500 for the 80-S that the OP posted.

There is no way to understand irrational behavior, and nobody (including a self proclaimed expert like yourself) can say with certainty that this was a smart buy. That can only be decided depending on what the coin brings when it is sold again. For myself the coin is not appealing to me and not something I would care to chase, but to each their own.

There is a certain look of toning on Morgans that brings out the moon money. The OP coin has it, the Sirna moose has it, the 1881-S from Aurora has it. Trying to compare any other type of toner to it and saying I'd rather have this for a tenth of the money is like saying I'd rather have this 1876 twenty cent piece than that 1876-CC one because I Can get it for a tenth of the price. Well, that's all fine and good and certainly a matter of personal opinion but it doesn't mean knowledgeable collectors will agree.

I wouldn't pay over $200 for it! But doesn't matter. The only person it matters to is the buyer. If he/sh is happy that is all that counts.

Arguments stating these are "common date" coins are weak. This is a condition rarity situation, not a generic grade.

The grade on the slab also may not reflect the toning, so using only the slab grade ignores essential facts.
Especially for older holders. It's my understanding that the incorporation of beautiful toning in the slab grade (via the "eye appeal" assessment) has changed over time.

Finally, guessing at another person's motives for posting their viewpoint tends to be error-prone. It's wise to resist the temptation.
And it's disrespectful to claim their motives are only monetary.
If people's motives were only monetary, they would not spend time on coins - you can make lots more money elsewhere.
It's more likely they are here because they are passionate about coins.

I don't own a Morgan of any kind. It was a smart buy if the coin makes the owner happy.
