1921 Peace Dollar (VAM-1K) - PCGS MS-63 - Very Strong (Hammered) Strike!!

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm pleased to share this new purchase with my fellow forum members. -- I selected this coin specifically for the very strong (Hammered) strike on obverse and reverse. image

Perhaps it was one of the 1921 Peace Dollars minted using the 150 Ton striking pressure (Ref: Roger Burdette's "A Guide Book of Peace Dollars").

Thanks in advance for sharing your comments, thoughts and observations about this interesting coin.

An exceptional strike on that one to be sure. I have one that's similar in strike detail in a PCGS MS63 slab.

Looking at the thickness on the neck I would say very well hammered.

The coin looks to have nice original surfaces which is always a bonusimage

Another fine High Relief specimen you have found, Stuart.

Yup. That's about as close to fully struck as you can find on a business-issue coin. There are perhaps a few that are better, but not many! This one was most likely made on the first day of production, Dec 28, 1921.

    stunning example

    strong strike...i agree
    a strike moose...not so much

    overall though
a perfect storm was brewing here

to me...prettiest coin design ever in the 1921 high relief !!!!
and high grade with full strike aren't common

thanks for sharing it's beauty with us

Lance: Thanks for your above quoted posted question.

In reply, although I presume from the auction listing photos the answer will be yes, I have not yet received the coin to examine in hand.

When I do I'll be pleased to post a thread update with the answer to your question.

    Stuart,
    I'll bet they're there.

Do you recall RWB's 2009 document "Common points of weakness on 1921 Peace dollars"? Fun article. I can post it if anyone's interested.

I reincarnated this post of Roger Burdette's (RWB) "Common Areas of Weakness on 1921 Peace Dollars" 2009 reference article, that he's granted permission for us to post on this forum for educational purposes.

Too much light from 1 o'clock, can't see detail in pic. Crucial.

Also captures the round semi circular cheek, don't see that too often on posted Peace images. Good job!

    My .02.

    Good luck.

I've attributed the subject coin as a VAM-1K (Oblong Die Gouge at back of Miss Liberty's Neck) as illustrated in this VAMWorld Web Link and have updated the thread illustration legends to include this annotation.
