Visited a Coin Shop Today - Must Have Been Toner Tuesday! *NEED TECH Grade Opinions*

There is a decent shop not too far away from me that I have not been to in
3+ years it seems. I know this because the shop changed hands about
3 years ago and has a different name now. With that much time it is
probably safe to say that the inventory has changed over since I was there
last. I initially went there to look for Mercury Dimes and especially to see if
I could Cherrypick something good like a 1919 DDO. No luck with a 1919 DDO.
I could have Cherrypicked a 1945-D FS-501 in VF raw but it would not have
been worth the bother so I left it for someone else. The shop is fairly large
and I spent a bit of time just walking around looking through all of the cases.
I was told they had more stuff that wasn't out, had not been priced yet etc but
if I was looking for something specific then I should just let them know. They
were very friendly and I enjoyed my hour+ there. Not really finding much,
I asked if they had any toners. This is not a normal question that I ask but
I figured what they heck, who knows what I might find. One of the employees
told me they had a few things and he would gather them for me to look through.
A couple of minutes later the manager came forward with a couple of piles.
The coins were a lot of fun to look through. We came together on prices for a
few items, shown below, that I think were fair. There were three Jefferson
Nickels that were pretty nice, with rainbow toning, 1938, 1938-D and 1940 if
I recall correctly, and the prices were probably fine but they were just a bit more
than I wanted to spend. I opted not to tie up the $15-25-ish per coin that would
have been required. There was a nice Roosevelt, 1947-S maybe, that had a more
subtle blue-gray-ish bit of toning that I also passed on. I did see one AU58 1945
Walker half that was amazing...but it seemed to be clearly AT. It was cool though
but still passed on it at $24.
All of the below coins are raw. I am aware of the dangers with raw toners in addition
to the grading challenges etc but think I was conservative enough not to get harmed.
I am kinda thinking about going back to reconsider one of the nickels. Not sure yet.
Feel free to comment, GTG, say everything is AT damaged pooo, whatever.
My feelings won't be hurt.
By far, the most expensive but also the most impressive to me. As much as I tried, I
could not locate any wear. The coin is full of great luster with purple, silver and orange
colors. There is nice luster in the orange areas but I just couldn't capture that along
with everything else in the photo. Sometimes with toners it is a balance of capturing
the luster or the color, both can be more challenging. I really like that the portrait is
in a nice silver. On the neck, to the left of the ribbon, there is what seems to be a small
die chip. Not sure if this is some type of special million dollar Snow Variety but maybe
one of the more knowledgeable members here will share. I like the coin very much
and I am pretty happy with the photos.
A pretty darn cool quarter is up next. I also like this coin very much. I was a bit hesitant
with paying the price because I didn't want to pay this much but you only live once. I
was pretty happy that I was able to accurately capture the colors on the coin. $20.
1961 Lincoln Cent that was in the US Mint Celo...I cut it out to photograph it. Most of Lincoln's
head is a dark purple. The coin was a terrible challenge for me to photograph and I kinda just
gave up. It isn't worth the trouble. 1961 Toner Cents with purple are very common and I
should have just left this stupid thing in the shop. I flushed $10 down the toilet on this one.
Proof 1976-S Lincoln Cent that has some nice reverse toning but the condition of the coin
is pretty rough. Here again, I should have left this one in the shop but it was only $4
flushed down the toilet. Whatever, I won't cry too much.
2000-P $1 which had subtle obverse toning. It has some slight purple in the lower left and top
right but I was unable to capture it along with everything else. The yellow toning I thought
was pretty darn cool though even though it is subtle. Another $4 spent.

that 1863 ihc...
well...it just looks amazing and i'd be one happy camper if i popped open my sub results and saw it graded
that 59 washington...something about the green of the obverse...i love
lol
1961 lincolns....yup the're out there...i'm up to about 4 myself
getting toners graded can be a challenge
most who do...know this
I'm also a little skeptical that the quarter may have been AT'd also....but again, I may be completely off base, and
your prices paid wouldn't have you buried in them regardless.
<< <i>Nice coins - but I suspect the 1863 cent may have had the color induced via MS70.

The same thoughts crossed my mind as well
but with other colors in there, the crackling and the more purple and silver than the problematic blue on copper I
decided to take the gamble. The quarter was another gamble but much cheaper and still pretty cool.

Nice descriptions and the pics are superb.
I love the 1863, as will everyone else. The quarter is fun too.

You did well.
It's nice to visit a shop and leave with something you like without breaking the bank.

<< <i>I like them all. I suspect the '59 is AT, but hey, for the price I'd have bought it. >>

Certainly anything is possible and I have enjoyed the opinions. From reading these forums for several
years now, I have read about BLUES being suspect on copper coins and the finger has been pointed at MS70.
In this particular case, is see purples more than anything else and I have seen purple on graded IHCs before.
It is a bit different from anything I have seen, that's for sure.
I am thinking about sending the IHC and Washie to PCGS. Based on the prices paid, I don't have much to lose
thankfully.
I still cannot detect any wear on the coins and they have nice luster so that's a plus.

All the coins are amazingly nice, but that IHC is just plain world class. I'm jealous of that one.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
I like that Indian penny,,, Very cool! It`s really late so i`ll get back to you more another time...
Have a good one!
