so a recent purchase of mine is a strange one
to me...it's not gold toning here...it looks like gold plating...in a graded slab
opinions or comments...please

Finest Toned Ike I've Ever Seen, been looking since 1986
RIP Mom- 1932-2012
this really had me wondering...fingers crossed our host will straight grade it too
as to me it's very unusual looking
My best guess was that when some new dies were put in the press they still had a light coating of oil on their faces, put there earlier to keep the dies from rusting before use, and that this light coating of oil on the coins caused the yellow toning. Never could prove it.
The 1967 SMS coins were made similar to the 1968-on Proofs
but that half-and-half look on the obverse is unsightly.

yes
i'll even gamble and crack this and send it in raw with the guidance of opinion presented here
thanks everyone as i was totally stumped if it was gold plated
i'll update this thread in the far off future with a trueview and how our host saw this coin to be
sms toned nickels just aren't common and it's a part of my core collection i desire to be complimented
this would be upgraded later if some start showing themselves
I suspect that they are more common than what you have been seeing on eBay, which tends to be your main source based on purchases you have posted here. the holders aren't air tight but they seem to be a little better than Capital type holders. along those lines, an eBay seller might remove coins from a set and dip them or "assemble" a set hoping for higher bids. in that regard the holders work for and against the coins.
the one pictured here looks to be what is typical when a coin is dipped and improperly rinsed, tending to develop a golden hue where the dip residue remains.
