Latest chapter in the unsearched wheat cent roll business

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,629 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here is an interesting auction for an unsearched wheat cent roll that shows a flying eagle cent on one end and a mercury dime on the other. One has to wonder how the seller knows it's a wheat cent roll at all, as neither end shows a wheat cent, and the roll is allegedly unsearched. Reading the description suggests it also has an Indian cent on one end of the roll. It clearly must have three ends. Truly, this roll must be an amazing item to see in person. image

90% of eBay rolls are seeded that way.

I wish I could find the thread from a few years back about these "unsearched" rolls. One of the posters crudely photoshopped a diamond ring on one end of it. It's about as likely to come from the bank with a diamond ring as it is with a dime and flying eagle cent on each end.

I'm picturing a 12 foot thick roll with two Yap stones on the end. Of course, it would be marked "Outlaw Bank of Carson City - 1877" on the side in some kind of ink that didn't exist until 1985. When you crack it open, 48 examples of corroded 1958-p Lincoln cents are rolling around between the stones.

Geez, I hope they at least offer free shipping on the Yap stones. Those things are heavy! image

Generally the feedback for these sellers is pretty good. I have followed a person in our coin club who buys these rolls regularly, sometimes for high prices, sometimes very very high prices, depending on the expectation of the end coins. She has purchased enough of them that I think I understand the philosophy of these sellers. They want return customers, and good feedback to keep going, so they are very careful about what goes into the rolls. In every case the rolls contained not just the interesting end coins, but also other coin(s) of interest inside. The overall value of the roll was typically 50-75% based on price lists but occasionally exceeded the value (based on retail price lists). For instance, one roll with a low grade 1909-S on one end and high grade 1909 VDB on the other end sold for strong money. It had a few low grade S-VDBs in it, bringing the list value well above the selling price. The S-VDBs were decent, but had enough problems that they would never be TPG graded, so actual value was far less. Seems the seller might pick up S-VDB culls and fillers, and add them to the rolls as needed to make the buyers happy. She bought two rolls with Gold Dollars on the end, one for quite a bit more than the other. The one that sold for less had just the one Gold Dollar, but the one that sold for more had a couple more. Again, culls and fillers, but it is this pandering to the treasure hunter's dream that keeps folks coming back for more and more rolls.

Are you saying that the rolls are created AFTER the auction has concluded and the selling price is known? While I suppose that may keep the buyer's happy, it seems even worse ethically.

I suppose some rolls may have a value equal to purchase, however, they are basically scams and I, personally, just do not believe it is worth the time and effort. Cheers, RickO

Yeah, just last week I bought an unsearched roll of wheat cents and found a $20 Saint "stuffed" into it. And the roll before that had Jimmy Hoffa's favorite 89-cc silver dollar in it....counter stamped "JH" of course.

Yes, that is what I am presuming based on the results from a number of these rolls I'm privy to.
