NT or AT - Deal or No Deal????

Hello All,

I found these two morgans at a local coin shop. It seems like the asking prices are borderline to a bit high, but I am curious about the toning. They are very pretty in hand, but I am no expert. My question is, do you think they are NT or AT, and would the toning add a significant value if so. I would also certainly be interested in what anyone thinks the grade would be as well as an actual dollar estimate if the toning is NT. Hopefully the pics are good enough to make a guess. Thanks a bunch for any help!!

    I concur.

On #1, the 'giveaway' for me (maybe I am wrong, but in my limited experience . . ) is the crescent nature of the toning on both sides. Although certainly possible (and yes, I may also film Bigfoot in the grocery store later today) the crescent nature of that toning appears to be the toning process being applied to both sides, in exactly the same place. Color progression is relatively 'NT', but the flow of it is weird. I also see the attempted 'pullaway' on the stars, but it radiates out in all directions evenly, not just in one primary direction.

    On the second coin, my question . . . . .

After running the reverse through our local BCI (Bureau of Criminal Identification) . . . how did that one coin end up in the hands of both an extortionist in St. Louis from the 1906, and also a San Diego draft dodger in 1940? Imagine the coincidence . . . . .

The 1879-O is definitely A.T. One easy "tell" with this coin is the fact that it is lightly circulated. While it is possible
for a circulated dollar to tone in a paper envelope or a Dansco-type folder, these kinds of colors are not the result of
    either storage method.

The 1879-S is natural toning, but not the kind that brings a big premium.

1879-O: AU-53 questionable color, but might be market acceptable to some people.

The top coin is definitely AT, the second is probably NT but not worth a premium IMHO

Pass on both. Why pay high prices for unslabbed Morgans when there are so many available slabbed? To me the first coin looks AU, probably cleaned and retoned. The second coin appears to be mint state with original toning but the obvious fingerprints are a big negative.

First coin is AT. These are getting more and more prevalent. The obverse closely follows the natural color progression, but the class 2 green near the bottom is too bright and floaty. The reverse of the coin screams AT. Glowing yellow spattered like that is flat-out AT. The AT hurts price by a little in most cases unless you find someone that likes this kind of AT. Even then, not much premium.

Second coin is NT. The colors do not float and follow the color progression. This coin is in the early part of the toning process being just class 1 yellow and class1 brown. In places it progresses as far as purple class 1. No premium for the toning. The yellows and browns usually don't bring premium, and the toning is quite uneven and make the fingerprints more glaring. I would say $5 to $10 lower than if it were untoned (MS62?).

  • If the guy who sold those really thought that 79-O was uncirculated and NT that price would be more than 100 bucks.
