Brandon, FL Coin Show Report

It has been a few months since I have been to a show and CoinZip's post reminded me of this one. image
This is a small show but always good and I enjoy many of the nice dealers there.

My kids are frequently my alarm clock but they slept in today, which is very unusual, so we got a little later of
a start than initially desired. I guess we were all well rested so that's a plus. We left about 10am, made a stop
at my PO Box to pick up a very very pretty NEWP that I bought from a forum member here, THANK YOU! I also
had a check for a coin I just sold. The day was off to a great start and we were at the show by 11am.

I was hoping to find some Mercury Dime Varieties. Sadly, I did not find anything worth taking home but I could have
Cherrypicked 4 different Mercs had I wanted them. I looked through close to 10 1919-P Mercury Dimes, VF and lower
grades, and was unable to find a DDO. Maybe at the next show? My kids wandered around a bit looking at shiny things.
My daughter kept coming to me asking for money. It was very cute. Luckily, the kids got a nice little goodie bag of
coins when we entered the show. Very nice! image One dealer had their dog with them so that served as quality entertainment
for my kids while I tried to find things. One dealer had a bunch of fairly common PCGS Sample Slabs with Roosies in them
but he wanted about $40 each so there was no deal to be had there. I looked through a ton of 2x2s and Slabs but nothing for me.
I was scanning the entire show for toners and I did not see ONE TONER in the entire place which surprised me. My daughter
really likes them. One of the last dealers I visited with was the one that had the dog. I figured I had to at least thank them
for entertaining my kids for a good bit of time and see if there was anything of interest in his case. I looked at a couple
of coins but there was nothing for me. I then remembered I had a couple of slabs in my pocket and I offered them up
to see if the dealer had any interest. To my pleasant surprise, I was able to sell my 1875-S/S 20c in old ANACS MS62 for a
small profit. Shortly thereafter, the kids and I were starving and made the drive home for a late lunch.

Besides not finding a Mint State 1919 DDO Merc, it was a MOST EXCELLENT DAY with MOST EXCELLENT PEOPLE. image

After jogging, mowing the grass, and picking a bunch of limes, I was in my pool too!
And we have Clearwater and Summer FUN coming up, so you'll have plenty more cherrypicking opportunities in the next few weeks.

Interesting report---thanks for sharing. Sorry that you didn't find anything but it sounds well worth it to be able to sell your 20 cent piece and to be able to talk to dealers, while showing the kids a good time. image Shows are always fun no matter what IMHO. The worst show is way better than the best day at work.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

    Thanks everyone! image

Walkerguy21D: Yes, I am very much looking forward to Summer FUN. I am not sure about the "Clearwater" show
as I will have to look up the info online about when/where. Have to put that one is quotes as it has not been
in Clearwater for a number of years now. I have always enjoyed it though. Before the pool today, I jumped on the
treadmill for a quick 3 mile run and watched the kids through the window playing in the pool. Our days were pretty
similar. Unless it is after 8PM or before 8AM, the runs have to be on the treadmill. Otherwise, I might die. Lol

lasvegasteddy: I have never been to LV but I do watch the weather plenty. Crazy dry heat there. This weekend it
has only been about 93 here but the Feel Like temps have been around 105 with the humidity. I lived in Texas for
about 2 years many years ago and one summer there were over 50 days in a row where the temp was over 100.
Much dryer there than here but not as dry as LV. A/C is definitely my friend! About a week ago, I ran 4 miles at noon
outside when the temp was above 90. Not pleasant but the treadmill was in need of service at the time and I had no
    choice that day. Yikes!

Walkerfan: I agree. It was a great day!

This afternoon, I went through the freebie coin bags with the kids. Mostly darkside but there were two US Coins in there.
Nice problem free 1903 IHC in VG10 and then a 1951 Jefferson. Cool stuff.

Tonight, now that I have the kids in bed, I am trying to photograph my NEWP. To duplicate the effort of the PCGS
True View is really simple but it isn't right. I am a bit stumped as to how to photograph it in order to replicate
exactly what I see in hand. The coin is not a series that is my specialty, it is a proof which I rarely handle and then it is
a crazy toner. All of those things are killing me right now. Hopefully I will figure it out without wasting too many hours.
image It's a fun challenge for sure. I love the coin and always try my best to get my photos to replicate what the coins
look like in hand. Right now, I am understanding why PCGS didn't quite do that. Lol

Very insightful comments about trying to capture a coin's personality in a photograph. I have worked with a few that gave up their secrets only reluctantly, and with plenty of experimentation. Some are still keeping their secrets, but I haven't tried everything yet. image Who wouldda thunk that a rim-toner Barber Half would look best with a single Halogen, at a low angle, partially diffused, oriented at 4 o'clock???

I gave up last night after reading this. image I have more ideas of things to try today. image

Good report and sounds like you and the kids had fun. Reading the difficulties with coin photography (yours and many others on the forum) just reinforces my long ago decision not to try it..... I am sure I am much happier this way - just enjoying other peoples pictures. image Cheers, RickO
