Opinion on this 1847/47. Looks to have some PVC on the obverse and reverse but overall a nice coin. Opinions on the coin, preservation process and grade guesses welcome.

Very nice coin. Grade is AU-AU+. How does one
    remove PVC from copper?

Not my series but it looks fantastic to me, free of distracting spots and hits. Well done.

    Nice coin!

Nice coin....I have been looking for one like that for my variety type set.

I would never soak copper in acetone. My experience in doing so usually results in a purple sheen if the coin has PVC on it. I would gently wash it in warm soapy water and pat it dry.

Acetone will turn it funky colors. I go MS63. Not positive that is PVC.

That sure looks like PVC on the "F" on reverse.

Very nice N-2 Large 7 over Small 7 ( some believe it was the same punch )

Yours has a bit of PVC on OBV & REV. Centrils are smoother on some stars
than on the Naftzger 64 R/B. Not sure what I see on the hair above the ear,
on the upper bun & the lowest shoulder curl. Early die state and appears to
not have rev die cracks yet.

    Nice find!

Looking at that again, it occurs to me that I never noticed how bold that "Large 7" is before. Perhaps I have just never seen a good picture of it before. Looks deeper in the die than the 184, which supports the theory that it is the same punch more deeply (and widely because of the sloping sides of the punch) impressed into the die. But why would they touch up a 4-digit date with a single digit punch?

Nice coin; could be PVC, or remnants of some old lacquer.

If you have some of the old Blue Ribbon, I'd try that first. If it remains, it's probably a lacquer, then I'd do acetone, followed by Blue Ribbon.

As stated in the Goldberg "Naftzger Collection III Late Dates" by Bob Grellman ( I assume )

All 4 digits of the date were repunched using a 4-digit logo punch... ...the first date was punched
in too low on the left end and too high on the right, and the 8 was the locus of the slight
rotation between the two punchings . Hence the repunching is more separated on the 7 than
on the adjacent 4 because it is farther from the center of rotation. And the date was more
strongly impressed on the right end causing the 7 to appear fatter thanks to the beveled edges
on the numeral punches. (This is paraphrazing the cataloger's description)

This same obv was also used on N-31

Should make AU58 at PCGS or NGC (bare minimum) even with the green around the stars. If it already bagged for PVC, do the acetone rinse and try again. Just be advised that an acetone rinse can strip organic grime off the surface, lightening the color and/or causing the coin to appear dull. If this happens, put some intentional, greasy fingerprints on it after you're done (seriously). Circ. copper is already covered with oils from peoples' grimy fingers, and replacing it can restore the dried out look to some extent.

This is a highly desirable Redbook variety that is seldom offered above XF, and demand is quite high for it as well. Get it in a AU58/CAC or MS64 BN/CAC holder and you'll sell it for moon money. If it comes back MS62, you might actually be in worse shape.

Acetone on brown copper is not scary. I'd give that a try. Blue Ribbon is a good idea, later, in spite of what PCGS told the Sniffer. Acetone tends to dry surfaces excessively.

My guess is the photos are a little bright and the coin looks darker in hand. Goodness.

I'd call it a solid 58. I like it a lot. Nice surfaces.
