Should I buy 5 sets, submit to PCGS with First Strike labels and sell them to the nice people on eBay?

What about only slabbing the reverse proof dollar? Will anyone want a slabed presidential medal?

  • BigABigA Posts: 2,715 ✭✭✭✭
I always find it amusing that the Mint goes through the work of coming up with an attractive package and we just rip the crap out of it to send in just the coin....

I should add that I am shocked that the HH limit is 5.....this will be ugly. I hear a LOT of whining in the futureimage

Edited to add: mintage limit: none...product limit 17,000.....perfect....now we will also have the "it will be included in another set" people come out of the wood work.

Seems the mint wants these sold as fast as possible. I don't think they enjoy that the past chronicle sets have lingered and they can't get rid of them. I have most except the Benjamin Franklin, but only collect the presidents.

I only want the medal! How do you think the secondary market wil treat me?

The 2015 Coin and Chronicles Set includes a 2015 Harry S. Truman $1 Reverse Proof Coin minted in Philadelphia (found only in this set!),

The reverse proof will be only available in this set. With an exclamation point! That means this coin will be a the key and probably will be needed for a complete presidential set.

It is a P minted coin which makes me believe if the mint makes the reverse proof mint set this year it will probably be S minted.

With only 2016 left, I doubt it will be unseated. Like the enhanced sac, the mint is giving you a gift this year.

I think I will be shut out. At 5 sets that's only 3400 orders, so probably be sold out in 10 minutes. Probably some time to complain to the mint beforehand at the ridiculous house hold limit of 5.
  • Well, I'm in on these. I think they should be a great addition to my collection. The mintage being only 17,000 could be key to the series in a good grade. As for the HH limit, I'm sure most of us have a way around that. That is if you were going the flipper route. Kris.

    I'll be in for one

Yeah yeah household limit of 5. OK whatever.

But dont be surprised if the big time flippers are holding 1,000's to flip.

image ... how does this always happen ?

Placeholder pages put up for the other three sets this year:

    Dwight D. Eisenhower (AX2)

    John F. Kennedy (AX3)

    Lyndon B. Johnson (AX4)

All state a release date of December, no mintage or household limits.

They've also put up placeholder pages for the 2015 high-relief coins, and both have release dates in December. December might be a busy, busy month. (Busy for my CC, anyway...)

I'm in for five, but two will remain intact to go with the rest of my C&C sets. Considering how the MoD dimes are grading out, the other three may remain raw rather than getting three 69's.

I'm also betting all the sets will be shipped in time to be FS/ER eligible, so a very close inspection of the coins will take place before making a decision. image

<< <i>It is a P minted coin which makes me believe if the mint makes the reverse proof mint set this year it will probably be S minted. >>

There is still no reverse proof set on the schedule for this year. With the other three C&C sets and the two high-relief coins to be release in December, I'd be surprised to see the mint produce one this year.

<< <i>With only 2016 left, I doubt it will be unseated. Like the enhanced sac, the mint is giving you a gift this year. >>

There are three other C&C sets to be released. All four this year may have similar numbers, though I wouldn't be surprised to see a higher mintage after the Truman experiment is done.

<< <i>I think I will be shut out. At 5 sets that's only 3400 orders, so probably be sold out in 10 minutes. Probably some time to complain to the mint beforehand at the ridiculous house hold limit of 5. >>

From prior sales, it seems to take the mint about 40 min to an hour to sell 30K sets @ 5/household. So probably more like 20-30 minutes.

The 2015 Coin and Chronicles Set — Harry S. Truman to be released [...see update] by the U.S. Mint will include a Reverse Proof 2015-P Truman Presidential dollar that will be available only in the set.

The set will be restricted to a release of 17,000 units, with household ordering limits of five sets.

Individual 2015 Coin and Chronicles sets representing Presidents Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson are all scheduled for release [later this year] by the U.S. Mint.

The Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson sets are also sscheduled to contain a Reverse Proof 2015-P Presidential dollar, silver medal and stamp specific to each president. Product limits are 17,000 for the Eisenhower and Johnson sets, with the limit for the Kennedy set established at 25,000.

If there are PF 70s, they may not stay that way. Copper is not a very stable metal but the first one to be sold will probably bring a lot of money as usual.

If only these things were made out of copper or bronze, but they aren't. The outer layers are made of 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese and 4% nickel. That alloy is very unstable and subject to ugly spotting. I can't tell how many mint sealed Proof sets of these things that have had ugly toning straight from the factory.

Count me out on this one. I was foolish enough to buy the sets for the two Roosevelts, Theodore and Franklin, but I'm out on this one.

the medal is silver .. The Truman $ 1 is not ?

  • << <i>the medal is silver .. The Truman $ 1 is not ? >>

Correct. The dollar coin is a Reverse Proof $1 coin, while the silver is a medallion, accompanied by a stamp showing the likeness of that president. The significance to the $1 coin is it is a Reverse proof that is being minted at the Philly mint with a total mintage of only 17,000 to be made while any further reverse proofs of this president ( if they make any) will be struck at the san Francisco mint. I hope this helps, Kris.

    I'm not sure

I think the mintage limit is a statutory limit and a product limit is a mint chosen number.

But don't quote me on that

Also, I don't see any news for the exact date of the 2015 UHR Gold.

I think product limit refers to the specific product packaging production limit (obviously) but if the set has coins included that have other limits then that will be the mintage limit like:

... the MOD set....product limit 75k, mintage limit 500k because of the pf $1 included

...the 4 coin Kennedy silver half set...product limit 225k, mintage limit none since all the coins are unique to the set (no clue why they didn't repeat the 225k here but see last point)

    ...US Marshall's $1....product limit "none" (not part of a set)...mintage limit 500k

So "product" refers to "set".....and if there are coins available outside the set then there will be a mintage limit attached referring to those coins

Thanks. Pretty confusing if you ask me, but that's just the mint being a part of the U.S. government. image

Yes, I see "This product will be available for sale in July 2015." But not the 7/23 date. I should have been more descriptive.
    Thanks for the link fix.

Wouldn't there be a few larger Coin Dealers in Memphis? I'd think so.

First we have the Bus People in Chicago. How much of a stretch would
it be to get some side door action going in Memphis?

  • Those busses were nutz...just like clock work when they pulled in. Very well organized although they had a hard time when the cops were yelling at them because they didn't speak English. Seems the coin moffia isn't any worse off even with the poor publicity.

My guess is that the RPs will show up in more than one offering. The Mint knows how to milk this for everything it can get. If not, I'd be somewhat surprised.
