Is this a repunched date or machine doubling?

    Machine doubling without a doubt.

    Some clues:

Identical doubling on all 4 digits of a shield nickel is always suspect. There are a handful of 4 digit RPDs in shield nickels, but most often it is machine doubling. Most of the 4 digit RPDs are very dramatic:

The other major clue is that you see the same doubling on the nearby devices (bottom of the shield, curlicues). This ALWAYS indicates machine doubling since the dates were punched in by hand after the dies were hubbed.

Machine doubling as stated by others. Very neat RPD's in howards reply!

This coin is up on eBay now:

    1866

My opinion is that it is disingenuous to imply that the date doubling on this coin is of any significance by highlighting it twice in both the auction heading and body.

I see strike doubling regularly offered on eBay as something of significance to entice buyers, but I don't recall seeing this previously after the seller obtained opinions here and clearly now knows it isn't of any significance or worth any premium.

I hope the seller will change the wording of his auction.

Possibly also it's telling that the OP didn't bother to thank the forum members who responded.

I hope "SME" is not too derogatory. image

    I haven't a clue what it means.

Thank *you*. The auction has been reworded, in just the way I think it should be handled. Doubling is mentioned, but it's also made clear it's machine doubling.

If a buyer doesn't know what machine doubling is, it's his problem.
