Standing Liberty Quarter question.....

DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭
Is there a Large and small "S" on the 1928-S? I can't find anything on this, but looking at the coins it sure seems like there is a difference in size on some.

Any help would be appreciated.

In Cline's book, he lists the 1928-S with a large and small mint mark.

Edited to add: Cline states the small mm is 3 to 5 times more rare than the large mm.

According to the Deluxe Redbook... 'large and small mint marks exist...their value is the same.'....Cheers, RickO
  • Dimeman---Without question, there is indeed a large and a small "S" coin. I have them.

My understanding was that the large "S" was worth more. Bob [supertooth]

  • Dimeman---- The following comes out of the Merc Dime book from David Lange.

Apparently a Jack H. Tod did a study in 1961. His findings revealed that:

    1 in a hundred dimes---1 in 25 cents---1 in 15 quarters---and 1 in 6 half dollars had the Large "S" mintmark. Bob [supertooth]

DIMEMAN, that eBay one has a larger S than most, however I believe the Inverted S mintmark is the only variety that PCGS will recognize for that date.

When the Inverted S variety was added to the last CPG, myself and a colleague cherrypicked dozens and submitted them to PCGS. We ran most of them through Teletrade (remember them?) where they sold for $200+ in G/VG. Once the market caught on, we couldn't get $50 for Fine examples.

  • Dimeman---Looks to be a large "S". But, with pictures, I won't swear 100%

The large "S" coins---the "S" takes up the entire space. And, if you put the small and the large "S" coins side by side---there is NO DOUBT about the differences in sizes.

There is also an "inverted S" variety as well----which when viewed, there is NO DOUBT that the "S" is inverted. Bob [supertooth]

I have a 1928-S large 'S' penny. This variety has about the same mintage as 1931-S.
