PVC on Gold

I have used acetone on silver before, but never on gold. I bought a $5 liberty that has a small touch of PVC on the reverse. Just want to make sure I can dip old gold in acetone same as silver. Thanks

You can dip gold in just about anything except aqua regia. However, I've never seen PVC affecting gold. I've not seen it all, but I didn't think that happened.

    That's my understanding also.

If old gold has been exposed or in a flip containing PVC for an extended period of time, the copper alloy in the gold could react, no? That is also where carbon spots come from, so I would assume that PVC can affect old gold...just my opinion and thought.

It could affect the copper, but never the gold. If it was able to bind to copper (i.e. spot), then there may be surface damage. Good luck, Cheers, RickO

    Acetone won't hurt gold.

Just removed PVC from some gold 5's and 10's the other day. It looks just like it does on silver; green, slimy goo.

PVC doesn't affect gold. Pvc flips will breakdown over time, given the right conditions and deposit a green slimy goo over any coin in them.
I have pulled empty pvc flips from safe deposit boxes that were full of green slime.
As mentioned, the pvc could harm the copper in the gold if not mixed well.

give it a dip for sure, pvc left untreated will damage the coin further.

As a relative newbie, and I'm not 100% for sure, but I thought pvc on gold too long left a film on the coin that was very difficult to rid. In examining a few, and discussing with Doug winter, I was under the impression this was the case and left like a translucent film on coin. I recall Doug telling me some of Bass' coins were subjected to this. I've also seen one of the Bass coins that there was something clearly wrong with the the coin with this "look" to it. Anyone else?
