I was just having a conversation at Long Beach with not one but two David's at dinner about these little gems of numismatic uncertified certification when lo and behold, one pops up at the shop:





I thought it interesting that the reverse of the slab says "American Fidelity Coin Grading Service", among other things.

This guy's appearance brought the topic up again, and we found ourselves wondering just how many of these little basement-slabbers have existed over the years.

So post 'em if you've got 'em! Let's see the strangest slabs you've got.

That slab was probably during the transition time when American Fidelity Coin Grading Service was being acquired by American Alliance Coin Grading Service with a $10,000,000 stock buy out.

Homemade slabs are all over the place on eBay. You can't list a numeric grade in the listing title on non-approved TPG's on eBay, coinmasters had to cover up his grades in the pictures for a while, but I guess he was able to weasel out of it.

I love his condition description SBA Proof S Mint Mark is rewadable on this one
But apparently he is still smarter than his buyers

I just saw two peace dollars in those AACGS holders last weekend when I was having a conversation with another dealer at the local monthly show. To my surprise they looked pretty accurately graded even though they were MS61 and MS62.

I had never heard of AACGS until I bought a small collection the other day with one of their slabs in it. It's currently listed on ebay if anyone is interested

So the obverse of an AACGS is graded by American Alliance Coin Grading Service while the reverse is graded by American Fidelity Coin Grading Service. I guess that gives you both a second opinion and plausible deniability. Or something like that.

When I lived in WA state and went to coin shows monthly, I would see some oddball slabs... there were a lot around at the time. No shows here, so do not see any slabs except on the internet.... and there are quite a few out there now. Cheers, RickO

Wouldn't you like to meet the guy who has his entire collection in these? What are they? 4" by 8"? How soon did this company realize that their slab was way too big. How fast would these fill an average size box and there's only a couple of rolls of coins in there?
