Long Beach Show report with some Pogue pictures

I think Shakespeare described it best for me with "Neither a buyer nor seller be" since my experience was a zero sum game.
Actually I bought a couple of hot dogs and got ripped $22 for parking, so I'm out $30.

I was looking for a few coins and I wanted to try selling some duplicates, but I didn't try very hard. I had two PCGS boxes, one with some type set duplicates and another with toned Morgan's. Since my photography skills are lacking I thought it would be easier to sell the toners face to face.

I started planning yesterday on which coins I wanted to take. This morning I went to my SDB and filled up the two boxes to take. After leaving the bank I immediately stopped at the Waffle House for breakfast. Since I left the coins outside I was wondering if locked my car, but dem waffles looked so tasty I just ate instead of checking my car image

The Long Beach Convention Center room is rather large and there were lots of tables set-up. They crowd was moving about but I don't know how much product changed hands, but I did personally witness a $180 transaction so I know there were sales. The dealers cases pretty much had the same stuff you see at shows, but overall there was a nice range of coins with lots of books and boxes and slabbed coins in cases. I did hear some dealers lamenting about the state of the market and wondering if it would improve any time soon.

I put price stickers on my coins (which is something I wish all dealers would do) with what I paid for them. If I saw type material in the dealers case and they weren't busy I asked some if they'd like to look at what I had for sale. Some would take a few out and go look up some prices. But I got tired of that so I pretty much just looked at their offerings.

I also stopped at Heritage and Stacks and talked about terms listing with them for their Internet auctions. The guy at Heritage looked up each one asked what I wanted for the box of 20 and I said $26k and he said he came up with $23k. So that's not so bad I guess since no dealers wanted to pay my retail prices. eBay has their $50 max fee promotion so I'll list some there and try the BST then pretty much send the rest to Heritage and/or Stacks at the end of the summer.

PCGS was there with on site grading and also had another booth set up (1135) where they are giving away the Periodic Table of Coins poster (in both black and white) so I got those image Thanks PCGS. So be sure to stop buy and get yours.

Stacks had some of the Pogue coins on display. I was there when they were taking them down and the guy held out one so I could take a picture. Thanks guy at Stacks!
It was an 1812 Gold $5 MS66+ and was amazing.

I saw some GIANT coins I had never seen before. I probably should have bought one.

Thanks for the report. I heard that they had record attendance yesterday. I was busy all day, and had some great sales. 1856 FE cent PR65 and others. Much better than any June Long Beach in a long time.

    Great report! image

Did you take any reverse pics of the 1812 $5?

For scale if the NGC jumbo slabs where doggie doors what type of canine could venture through?

For example Beagle, Poodle, German Shepherd, Great Dane, etc.

Or if it was a cutting board could you carve a Ham or Turkey on it?

$23K for something you thought was worth $26K is not bad. Maybe if you haggled you could have gotten $24K out of them. Is it worth not selling at that price? Just an outside observation. I don't know what you have into the coins or what they look like.

    Thanks for the report

The 1812 Gold looks like it was made yesterday! image That's one thing I like about the current BU W- Mint Gold Eagles from
the US Mint. You get a nice big Gold Eagle, it's virtually flawless, and you don't pay a $1,500,000 premium over the intrinsic
    value.

The cheap way to enjoy Coins. Well, not as cheap as pulling cents out of circulation, but cheaper than Pouge level. image

If an 1812 like that walked into a local bm, how many angry old dealers would tell the guy to take just that counterfeit round and don't let the door hit you on the way out...

For $22 they should at least check the air in your tires...$4 hot dog not too bad if it's Chicago style....how much is the water?....I've seen water at $4/bottle at a show I attend.

If I was selling coins for $26k, and I got an offer for $23k from someone with sterling finances, I'd have taken it on the spot. Why put in a bunch of my own labor, dragging it out while dealing with the eBay crowd??? Or leave it up to an auction check in half a year?

Leaving $26K in coins in the car while you eat waffles??? After unloading a SDB in preparation for a coin show, a restaurant is not on my itinerary.

Was that Heritage price of $23K an offer to buy, or an estimate on what they think they would bring in an internet sale? (ie commissions not included).

Hot dogs were $4.75 each and toppings, all the mustard packets you could empty, were free. Beverages were $3 - $4 and food is taxable.

The entry into the lot under the convention center wasn't dispensing tickets, so I got hit with the no ticket max fee. I did have a good spot right by the elevators where people park to get served again, because they were all marked reserved.

The $23k was an auction estimate, I didn't talk to a buyer.

Actually there are no Waffle House's[/] in California, but I've heard that's where the Midwest dealers stop on their way home from shows and get robbed while they eat.

When Stacks was packing up the Pogue coins they had a list and the guy was reading each label and the gal was checking them off on the form, so it was nice to see a procedure in place. There was only one visible unarmed security guy standing there, which I thought was lax.

To me the show looked busy but not overcrowded. If most were buyers spending money, then it should be a successful show for dealers. I did overhear one guy say "You've got a coin in your case there that I've been searching for 5 years to complete my collection." My guess is he paid strong money for it since it didn't seem like a good opening negotiation tactic.
