I purchased a 1941-S Washie a few months ago, and the reason that I bought it was because it appears to have re-engraved tail feathers. It also appears to have some sort or re-engraving or clashes just under the base of the feathers at the bottom of both wings and between the legs. I have looked on CONECA's website and can not find anything about it. Any thoughts or information on it??? Got three pics so everyone can see it, hopefully anyway. The tail feathers are the main focus of what I am curious about, however the other points of interest are pointed out by red arrows and I am curious about as well. All I can say is, thank goodness I have a nice macro lens to help capture these details like this.

Can't see it that well but there does seem to be something under the left wing. Try a few more photos with the light at various angles to see if you can catch it better. Doesn't matter if the coin is upright in the photos.

Are there any clash marks on the coin? What is see is suggestive of a counter-clash mark, where the outline of the wing could be transferred onto the obverse die during a first clashing and then transferred back onto the reverse die, in a slightly different position, during a second clashing. However, this is unlikely as the underside of the wing is opposite Washington's head, and the clashings would have to be very deep for the dies to touch there. There would be other clash marks elsewhere.

There are no other clash marks on the quarter at all that i have seen. The second pic shows those marks the best.

Could be die erosion. Seems to be a fairly late state die.

Please try a few more pictures.

The new picture (with arrows) is much better. Unfortunately I don't know what that is under the wing.

I lean towards die erosion... but that is because I cannot think of anything else to call it... and not totally sure that is what it is.... Cheers, RickO
