NJ80sBBC Unopened Pickup / Collection Pics Thread

I really enjoy the long running threads that some CU members have maintained through the years so I decided to start my own. I intend to share my pickups from the past few months, almost exclusively unopened 80s baseball, and some decent pics of segments of my unopened collection. Unfortunately my collection is spread across 3 different locations so I don't have a pic of everything together.

I also know that the interested audience for my fairly narrow focus is somewhat limited, but I hope those who have similar collecting interests enjoy the thread. Lastly, I hope that others post here too as there are definitely issues/form factors from this era that are missing in my collection.

Thanks,
John

I have seen several old threads showing some fantastic unopened displays. I will start out with a few pics of the more easily accessible portion of my collection. I really like my house, but it lacks a sizable empty room to house my collection in totality. So the bulk of my unopened Topps baseball collection is contained within a walk-in closet. Here is the majority of my full cello & rack boxes.

The next two pics represent the bulk of my 1980-1985 Topps and OPC wax box collection. These are the years for packs that were huge, and largely untouchable, for me as a kid, whose primary collecting years were 87-90. I never get tired of buying, and opening, 83-85 in particular. 1983 is my favorite Topps issue in this decade - in both design and for the strong rookie class.

Thanks for checking the thread out. Strange that you don't see the images though. I can see them and have logged off and back on.

Thanks! The cellos are a mix of 2-3 each of 81-84. IIRC there is only one 1985. I also have one each of 78-80.

The racks are mostly 84-85, with one each of 81-83.

Vending are mostly 82, all but 1 or 2 are BBCE. I have 1 each of 81 & 83. Not pictured are (6) 1984s that came directly from a case.

I have decided to do a Fleer vending run too. I dig the boxes and the consistent collation that they offer. This is the 1985 issue.

images working now...awesome collection..thanks for sharing

i agree...83s are my favorite in the 80s..so are u still ripping those ones or accumulating or both? at the current price point I basically am ripping my boxes occasionally vs selling them...still get the same enjoyment...and they're still at a fair price where i don't feel guilty ripping an entire box

can't wait to see your finds, i never tire of looking at those 83 rooks
    good luck and have fun

Very nice horde! I am particularly impressed with all the OPC. Underrated in my book.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

Thanks James. Your collection and long running thread are flat out awesome. Some serious 80's firepower there. I am going to try and get more pics together showing the 81-87 Donruss & Fleer holdings too.

    “Stacked to the ceiling
Nice display. Thanks for the pic”

Thanks for the kind words BobH! I am limited by both the ceiling and my fear of adding more weight - both on the integrity of the boxes and the shelves. Though I figure the wax is stacked 4 or 5 high in case form so I suspect that I’m within comfortable parameters on the former.

Thanks again. I am both ripping and accumulating, but doing both more slowly than in the past. I have historically ripped in the presence of people who enjoyed that activity, along with a couple beers. But my main partner in crime, my career US Army bro in law, moved to Texas. I probably rip a few packs every month, sometimes more, sometimes less. I have an open box in my home office, have several open boxes of different issues actually, and will pull a pack and rip when I get the urge. I'm not terribly scientific about the approach, but have alot of fun doing it. 1983 Topps is what really got me hooked after stumbling back into this hobby by buying and ripping mostly junk (86 & 87 Donruss and Fleer). Then I stumbled across an auction for something called "Michigan packs" and the rest is history. The price points have really leveled off and given the price of the highest graded singles are still relatively low, I'm comfortable that I'll be able to replenish my favorite inventory at current price points for a while.

I will update this thread with some pics of the better finds as I open packs.

Appreciate the comments! I've been buying up a few of the less expensive 80's OPC boxes and will probably build raw sets from them while keeping some for my unopened. Picked up this small lot of lower end stuff from a seller back in February.

1985 Donruss has always been one of my favorite issues of the 80s, with the Eric Davis card at the top of my list as a kid in 87/88. I have picked up many wax boxes of this issue and ripped many as well. I had not, however, acquired a rack box, which comes with 72 loose racks in a box. I found this partial box at the right price and had a stash on the side to fill it up.

The seller also included the following loose racks with stars on top, which includes one of my other favorites a, the Two for the Title card. I was a huge Winfield fan and that race and summer of baseball made for one of the best times of my life.
