AU53 can denote "problems"

when I see a phrase like that, I have to say: POST YOUR COINS GRADED AU53!

(I have three, but images for just two)

    Beautiful ½ dimes, Barndog.

Did not see any problems on my end.

This is the only AU53 coin I have. No problems and no real evidence of cleaning (which plagues 90% of AU Morgans).

Well, I only have two. I know it's often thought of as a "filler" grade, sort of like MS62. As in all things, it depends a lot on the series and the particular coin. Sometimes AU53 is just another stop along a broad continuum. The dollar was purchased as an AU50 and subsequently upgraded. If these have issues it's probably just that they don't have much luster left:

    Barndog you did just fine.

    Au58 is a 65 but circ.
    Au55 is a 63 but circ.
Au53 is a 61 but circ. Usually oogly.

Those are what I always lived by. Your old toning gives them eye A PEAL.
    Have a nice day

53 does indicate problems, and every grade under 53 denotes even more problems, just as every grade above 53 denotes less problems.

Currently have 5 AU53's in my barber dime set. None imaged, I had images here on the forum at once and everyone seemed to really like the look of them. I do think it depends on what series you collect though.

the "problem" is that a TPG AU53 can be anything from an actual XF45 to an AU58
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

I agree. Next to MS60, I think there is some kind of stigma associated with AU53. Fugly 55s gets 53. 58 can be better than 60, and 50 can be better than 53.

My scanner image, not the best picture.

This 1734/3 in AU53 is probably my favorite coin. Picture does it little justice.

I agree, to call some of these fine coins "almost uncirculated" seems far fetched. Truly, I believe AU58 is the only real "almost uncirculated" grade where others should be "XF".

Ironic you posted this as this is my single biggest pet peeve from a previous thread. There is no Almost Uncirculated nomenclature in the Sheldon Scale, it's About Uncirculated, go look.

I cringe when people use the term Almost Uncirculated because a) it's not a real term, b) any coin that is not Uncirculated is Almost Uncirculated (including VG8, for example)....that's why the Sheldon Scale doesn't used Almost Uncirculated because that would describe every single circulated coin.

    It's ABOUT UNCIRCULATED.

Ok, sorry, hit a hot button...image

Edited to add: not picking on the OP, just saying, we need to stop using Almost Uncirculated, that would be a good beginning towards moving away from some of the complaints...

Some nice coins shown, as always opinions vary- many are better than AU and some are not even AU (or pictures don't do justice to them).

Before TPG a common grade use to be XF-AU (AU as mentioned was used more for borderline unc. coins) and if you were selective you ended up with nice AUs (not necessary high AUs)

I've been sending in coins I picked up before grading, several that on exam had fine hairlines that I didn't see 30-40 yrs ago but one I sent was a 1827 CBH marked XF-AU that I thought was much better than that and was a high end AU.

Came back as a MS-62 ! Funny thing is after I got the coin back it was obviously unc. but never thought so before.

Does the holder make you see a coin differently?
