Lisbon Portugal - Visiting in September

I will be traveling to Lisbon in early September to trek the Caminho Portugal to Santiago de Compostela as a pilgrim. I will be in Lisbon for several days (arrival and departure).

I would at least like to correspond with any dealer. I would like to buy at least one coin from the era that the pilgrimage was established (13th - 15th century).

Does anyone have any coin dealer or even collections recommendations.

I will also be passing through Porto, Portugal as well.

Many thanks, John

Check out the ancient coin collection at The Gulbenkian. Although I doubt they'll sell you anything.

Sounds like a fascinating trip (and perhaps for reasons a bit deeper than the typical vacation, too).

If you stay in Lisbon during the weekend you could check the weekly coin show in the Ribeira market, here's a map with numismatic places of interest in Portugal (old but still 80/90% accurate, altough a bit incomplete for Lisbon), if you go trough Braga there's also a couple places you can check:

For coin types of that era you should be looking for Sancho II/Afonso III/Dinis "dinheiros" or a D.Joao I "Real Branco", a nice VF coin should be found below 100 US$, here's how they look like:

    Sancho
    Dinis
    Joao

  • I want to thank each of you for your recommendations and kind thoughts. I will be staying over at least one Saturday in Lisbon. The Caminho Portugues (the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela) passes just west of of Braga (through Barcelos). I can always make a detour as this time I am cycling.

I truly enjoy history, culture and languages augmenting these interests with collecting historic (affordable) coins.

    Thank you again, John

I have nothing to add about coins, but I hope you enjoy your trip!

Lisbon is a great place to visit--we had a nice, but too short, trip there. Did the basics, ate some tasty food, the hubby bought a bit of port to bring home of course, and generally had a very nice time. I'm embarrassed to say the highlight was eating the pastries made originally by the monks in the Heironomys (??? spelling) Monastary. The monastery is a wonderful place to see of course, and nearby is the place selling the pastries (very close to one of the few Starbucks in Lisbon...). Delicious! I also recommend taking the climb to the castle if you get a chance.
