I plan on keeping mine in tact. I have another rack I could potentially open somewhere down the line if I choose. Is anyone familiar with the sequencing (if any) to help determine to rip or not?
Sorry guys I was on business travel. I called the other day and left a message on voicemail at BBCE but didn't get a call back. Tried again this morning and got the machine. Left another vmail. I'll pay as soon as I can get in touch with them. Sorry for the delay.
BBCE doesn't usually send additional confirmation when an item ships. But I can see on UPS My Choice, that my package left BBCE last night. I paid on Sunday.
You can sign up for UPS and register your address so you can monitor items shipped to your location, reschedule deliveries, etc. Any item that is sent to your address via UPS is automatically added to your delivery calendar.
Got mine yesterday! Mine has Ben Oglivie, George Scott, and someone else in the other panel. I don't think it's any coincidence that Steve knows I'm a Brewers fan when he has to ship to Milwaukee. I picked up two 86 Donruss racks too, one had Rick Manning, and the other had Moose Haas showing. My guess is that if I ever pull the trigger on a 75 rack or cello, that Yount will show up on top.
My racks came today, very clean and very sharp!! I think I might have gotten Tim's packs, though... one has Jim Rice showing on front, the other has JERRY GROTE showing on front! I'll try to take pics/scans later tonight once I'm back home. Thanks again Tim and Steve!
Received my rack today by usps priority mail. No notable stars on front or back. I remember seeing a 1979 baseball 6 box rack case on BBCE just a few days ago. I was hoping there would be another group break as this one went so quickly. I don't see the 6 box case on their site anymore, I guess someone snatched it up.
Racks arrived today...no stars showing, but racks are in perfect shape! Alot of sharp(hopefully well centered) cards wait to be unearthed...anyone else ripping ?
No stars showing on mine, but whoever was doing the shrink wrapping decided to leave me a couple of chocolate cake crumbs in one of my holders on top of the last section of packs. It's going to kill my OCD.
As pointed out by BigMK, it appears the 6 box 79 rack case was purchased from BBCE website. Darn. Wonder when that was sold. Didnt notice it was no longer listed until today.
If my math is correct, in the 3 box case we purchased, there are 72 racks, with 6 cards visible for a total of 432 cards that we will all see visible on the front or back of our racks amongst the group. 432 out of 726 cards is 60%. So I think there is a 60% chance that Ozzie will make an appearance on someone's rack if the cards are packed from the factory in truly random order in these racks from a randomly open case. I guess a 60% chance of any specific card making an appearance on at least one of the 72 racks. 30% someone gets Ozzie on the front?
I am certainly no statistician or math whiz, but is this accurate? Or is my math flawed in that this would be the odds only if we were looking at a much larger sample, say opening hundreds of cases, then for any random case you opened, a 60% chance of Ozzie on top or bottom in a rack? Should it apply to one random case such as ours?
How do the odds look in 6 box case? my math fails in that situation. 844 random cards on top and bottom, but only 726 cards in the set. Certainly you cant expect a 100% chance of getting a specific card showing.

The odds won't be that high because there is guaranteed to be duplication. How much depends on Topps' packing sequence. But that also means there's a chance two or more racks have an Ozzie showing. Also, Ozzie only shows up in certain pockets. I don't recall which ones but it may only be the one near the header. So the odds are actually the number of those pockets vs the quantity of cards from those sheets also factoring in duplication odds. In other words, I don't think anyone would have any idea on calculating an accurate percentage probability for pulling an Ozzie showing rack.
I don't think the odds would nearly be that high. Each pack has a .82644% chance. Then I think you have to figure there's probably only 4 or 5 Ozzies in the whole case (technically only 3.8677 if you calculate those odds)... so you can only multiply by 4/5 instead of 72. So probably more like 4% chance. But with 79s being my favorite set, I've seen a lot of Ozzie racks. I bet I've seen 12-15 different racks with Tony Perez on top and Ozzie on bottom, by far the most. Must be something with sequencing, which just adds to the complexity of those odds.
79 Topps baseball set consists of 726 cards. Cards were printed on sheets, lettered A through F, 122 cards per letter. In a standard 79 rack, cards from A & B sheets should be in header section. Cards from C & D sheets should be in middle section. And cards from E & F sheets should be in far section. (This same collation was standard in 1978, as well.) Ozzie is from the A sheet and should appear in header section, so odds are based on that 122-card sample size.

Sequencing for late 70s Topps does switch up and/or break fairly frequently, and there are multiple possibilities on the sheet, so there is no single specific sequence
Cooper leads to Smith in one sequence, but is about 6 cards away, so it's a gamble at best, but one that I would take if I had a rack with him on top. If sequencing rang true in every case, the same cards would always show on top and bottom of a cell.

ripped my 2 racks late last night...no ozzie but some decent star power and a handful of damn near perfect cards...the stars are shown below, and i also have a slew of mint commons that i need to sort through....anyone know which ones are scarce from this set? like i said, these racks produced some sharp mint cards, so i encourage others to rip as well!
I received my 2 racks yesterday. No pictures but here is who is on front and back rack 1-nicely centered rack front Rozema/Cey/Easterly Back Cash/Leflore/Picciolo rack 2-not so nice centering front Mercer/Alston/Glynn back Bando/Otis/Rangers Team Card
The 2 front cards close to the header both have what appears to be the factory roll up at the bottom of the card. I will be keeping these sealed unless someone knows the sequencing and it is worth opening. Thanks again to Tim for organizing the rip and to bbce for the product.
Edit Also just wanted to let everyone know that I reached out to a former cu member regarding the sequencing of my packs to see if they are worth ripping. He replied back to me in regards to the case and told me that the case we ripped was originally from him then sold to Steve and that if any other cu members wanted sequencing info to contact him. He has told me he has opened and made notes on over 700 rack packs from this year. If anyone is interested im sure you can figure out who I am talking about, if not please reach out to me and I will point you in the right direction. thanks

Very nice pack. Always loved the Bump variations.
If the rest of the packs are like mine, corners are sharp and registration is even sharper... just takes good centering to have a beautiful card. Makes it tempting to rip!
Got mine today. Each rack has a HOFer showing on top. Blyleven on one and Bench on the other. No stars on the back. Centering seems ok, but corners and print are sharp!
Here's my pair of racks. I had one holdered FASC and one loose. The plastic is really soft on these unlike the crispy crunchy plastic you normally see on racks. Don't know if they'll end up aging now they're out of the case but it's cool to hold a 70s rack that is just like it was the day it was shipped from the factory. No Ozzie showing but I got a carew showing on the back of the loose rack so I can't complain. Also got a Sisler/Cobb All Time Hits Leaders card showing on the back of the FASC pack.
Very nice!! Some impressive star power showing up on these racks!

My two racks finally arrived today. They attempted delivery on the 8th, but I was out of town and they required signature confirmation. Overall, very pleased. My first rack has Steve Carlton on top in the middle cell and the second rack has the Greg Luzinski "N.L. All Star" card on top in the middle cell and Willie Stargell on back in the same cell! With all of this, I won't be ripping and am very happy. Thanks again Tim for doing this break and thanks to BBCE.
Edited to say that on the Steve Carlton rack, the Baltimore Orioles team card is in the last cell next to it. Awesome stuff.
Always looking for OPC "tape intact" baseball wax boxes, and 1984 OPC baseball PSA 10's for my set. Please PM or email me if you have any available.
My rack arrived today (My business does not accept weekend deliveries. I am very pleased, as it is very crisp. It did have some star power, as the front has JR Richard showing, along with a Gaylord Perry/Ron Guidry LL card. I will try to get an image later tonight.

If it's actually 2/122 (or 1.6%) if it can show on either the top or bottom of the header section that's much more prevalent than I had thought. So of course understanding the A-F letter distribution I think that Ozzie can only appear on the back of a rack so the odds are then back to 1/122 or .8% with the B sheet showing on top the rack header section.
It would also mean at a 1/122 change of an Ozzie showing back header you would expect one example per 6 box case.... Good luck all!
Very nice racks everyone! Even the ones without stars showing are super clean~truly "case fresh!"

Ripped this guy last night because nothing special was showing and the cards in the first sleeve were a little banged up on the bottom. Not much star power except off center Willie McCovey and Don Sutton. A few nicely centered commons is about it.
