I got a call today from a "GUY" selling silver. He asked me if I wanted to buy at 50c - $1.00 under spot?
I said sure,,,,, what do you have?
He said he had Canadian Silver Dollars.
I said how much?
He said well silver is $17.00 so if I buy 500 coins he could let me have them for $16.00 each.
I said what dates. He said he wasn't sure.
I said you do know that these are not pure silver and do not contain 1 oz of silver so saying you are buying at $1.00 under spot is misleading?
He then said well I am not as knowledgeable as you so can I have you talk to someone here who is? I said I was busy which I was and didn't have time.
A quick check at Silver Calculator says a Canadian Dollar 1968 - 1986 contains $0.21 in silver.
Evan a Canadian Dollar from 1935 - 1967 only contains $10.15 worth of silver.
He said the coins came from a hoard from a widow who had over 1,000,000 coins.

Thanks for the story, I got a chuckle out of it.
I counted them up. There were 40 altogether. I offered her $2. She refused.
There was no need to ask how many miles per gallon she got with her vehicle, at this point.
<< <i>Lady came in with a bag of nickels. She said, "I don't know why my mom saved these". I said, "Me either".

Coulda sold em to mrpaSeo for 1.99 plus shipping...
<< <i>It always amazes me how certain people always think they are smarter than someone they know does the same thing, like they're trying to bend your mind into thinking "this is a deal". >>
I run into this a LOT dealing with people from through free online advertisements. Someone responds to me with a huge amount of pocket change from the 1960s-80s (no silver content) and tries to call me a crook for not offering more than face value, even after I tell them to take it to the bank.
Then there are people who can't calculate the actual gold content to save their lives. Had one guy recently who was absolutely ADAMANT that his 13.3 gram coin made of 14k gold was half an ounce of pure gold. No amount of logic could prevail over his ignorance/scam.
him:
"Hi there,
A troy ounce (Precious gold and silver weight) is slightly less than a regular ounce. It is 49.8 which is .02 less than a half of troy ounce in gold. Then there is also the pure silver
So yes It is 1/2 troy ounce gold and then another portion pure silver. So the price is firm. "
me:
"A troy ounce is 31.1 grams.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_ounce
Your coin weights 13.338 grams of 58.33% gold = 7.78 grams pure gold. Divided by 31.1 is 0.25. One quarter of an ounce"
his reply:
"Hey there! Mr. think you know it all.
Not one person here trying to scam. A real collector for over 60 years.
Read up on the coin and you will know the exact amount of gold silver weight in it.
Then get a a life and move on.
Thank you"
