The whole affair looks to me like when someone gets accused with and charged with a crime. The accused denies everything while negotiating for a punishment less than the death penalty. The accused then agrees to life in prison and hopes that in time he might get out somehow.
I don't know how much might have come out had the investigation continued, but I'll bet it would have been devastating for Rose, otherwise he would not have agreed (been forced) to accept what amounts to a lifetime ban.
If you forgive Pete and think he should be in the HOF, good for you. But in every interview I have seen (many on youtube) Pete doesn't seem (to me) to be "coming clean" and I am not in favor of his induction. I don't "hate" Pete any more than any of the other players who have the statistics that could/should get them in. They took a chance and got caught.
Edited to add; I don't think Pete would EVER bet against his own team, but that is not relevant, he admitted to betting on baseball and on games he was involved in. That's all it takes to keep him out.

Those who feel they are "entitled" to be above the law will side with Pete. Those who feel they are to follow the rules of society will say no to Pete. >>
First off, it's not a "law", it's a regulation issued by a sports organization. Secondly, the discussion is about whether he deserves the Hall, not about whether the ban was justified.

Don't see a difference between "law" and regulation. When you sign a major League contract, you agree to abide by the rules or "laws", this gives MLB the right to punish you for breaking those rules.
I think everyone would agree that as a player Pete certainly deserves to be in the HOF.
Since he bet on games he was involved in while coaching/managing, he is banned from ever getting there. There is evidence that he bet on the Reds while he was a player/manager as well, but he has not admitted to that. Either way love him or hate him, it would seem to me to be impossible for MLB to allow him in when he broke the cardinal rule/law.

We put the same people in office year after year that should be banned for life from public office. This guy was a babseball great. Let him in. He has paid his price. Just my 2 cents..

People get ELECTED into office, if anything comes out prior to the election the voters don't like they don't get elected.
Roses "price" is clearly stated and he agreed to it.......lifetime ban. If he gets in after he passes away that's fine.

I wonder sometimes if the steroid era fiasco that has given MLB a black eye plays into the Pete saga. Meaning, the last thing MLB might want to do is open up this pandoras box of controversy (by letting Pete in the HOF), while still trying to put the sterods era in it's rear view mirror.Preferring to let sleeping dogs lie and let the whole Pete issue die a natural death.

Maybe change the rule to 20 years or something.
I think most fans want him in.
