Rare Morgan

While browsing an antique shop today, I found what may be the rarest of Morgan Silver Dollars....
A 1902 CC...I believe it is what some call a 'discovery coin'....

Probably more rare than the 1795 reeded edge dollar someone brought by the table at a recent show. It had to be real- it came from the attic in a 19th century farmhouse.

When did you discover that it was what you thought it was?

Oh yeah ? Well I got this 1878-CC Trade Dollar from Singapore that is within Mint tolerance for weight, so it must be real and therefore more rare than your 1902-CC Morgan. image

Price was $30... the reverse looks much better than the obverse... the date appears altered. It was in a key ring bezel (force held, not soldered)....will weigh it tomorrow...but in hand, seems right.... Cheers, RickO

If it turns out to be a real Morgan, what could possibly be the original date?

Steve, it does have the die scratch, but does not have the Eagle drool...I am sure it is the same though....the weight is 19.37g.... right for the counterfeit and way below the 26.73g of a real Morgan.....So this would make the population 4.....interesting anyway. Cheers, RickO

Truth be told, population is probably more like 4,000.

Probably true Bob.....I was just adding to the population at Steve's site....Cheers, RickO
  • Potential new die pairing! :-)

    I replied on the site.

The population report there only lists what is in The Black Cabinet's stacks and (if in parentheses) what exists confirmed in contributing catalogers' collections.
