Strange toning pattern....

crazyhounddogcrazyhounddog Posts: 13,980 ✭✭✭✭✭
I wonder what would cause a coin to tone in such a strange pattern? I'm not saying I don't like it, I find it quite attractive and the colors are almost neon. This is one of many toned nickel's I purchased from a guy selling his raw nickel's from his grandfathers estate. All are beautiful and this is just one of em from an old coin album. Any thoughts on this strange toning pattern. Thanks for any help.

Here's the 57-d from the same set. You would not believe how beautiful some of these nickel's are.

If that isn't Wayte Raymond album toning, I would be very surprised. Those early particle board album pages created some spectacular toned 5 cent pieces, in particular the 35% silver warnickels.
Here's a '43-D that was one of several similar pieces in an 11 piece war nickel set in a Wayte Raymond board that I sold to another forum member in a weak moment a few years ago.

    Another, a '44-P.

I'm pretty sure that was the case. He didn't have the album, he pulled all the nickel's out and was selling them singular. I asked him what kind of coin album it was and he told me it was really old. That's all I know about it. But I can tell ya that all of these nickel's are just as beautifully toned as it gets. Thanks to all. Happy hunting.

Acetone will do this you can tell by the pink color that is how copper looks like after you dip it in acetone a nickel has a lot of copper in it. If you find a dark toning Jefferson or Buff it will look like this after you dip it in Acetone some times, some times it will have the water look is what I call it becous of the liquid wave look of color you get and not the norm tone look it's from not turnning the coin whell it's drying or useing a Q-tip on the coin after the dip in acetone. It will get darker but to me will never look right. Cool coin but I can see what happen to it diped in Acetone image

An interesting concept. So I guess your saying it may have been dipped into acetone and the areas you see that are not toned was where there may have been dirt thus keeping it from toning in this area. Am I close?
