Serious enough that you'll get a details grade.

    Isn't a details grade a genuine grade?

My bad. I thought OP was asking if it would at least get slabbed.

I believe that coin would get slabbed problem free. That isn't much damage for a GB 1797 1d.

The rim mark to the right of the "T" makes it marginal for grading IMO.

I have seen worse but it looks significant enough to me and it would be easily visible in a prong slab. We'll have to agree to disagree.

  • You would be lucky to get NGC/PCGS/ANACS or ICG to straight grade it. They all have slightly different criteria on coins they are willing to straight grade and guarantee. I have thought about this issue recently with some gold coins with rim bag marks, I'm not sure where they draw the line. And they will not tell you unless they have the coin in hand and you spend the $$. Tolerances are wider for some issues that are common, ie flowing hair coins with light cleaning vs. Morgans with those issues. "Market acceptable" or not. If the coins get a number they are in the census, details/genuine coins are not counted in the census.

It should grade....but it is not a US penny. Wrong continent...It's English.

I think OP has an 1851 US penny with rim damage like the picture posted. At least that's what I'm gathering. It's hard to say anything without a pic of the actual coin.
